Yeah, I'm trading this next week. Really can't stand this new fad of 'quest hoovering' whereby you have some many fucking quests it's impossible to become invested in anything that's happening as each time you walk ten yards in any given direction there dozens of exclamation marks and quests that you feel obligated to pick up.

I can see the appeal for some people, and had I not played MMOs for years I might be more interested in this but it is basically, just an offline MMO that doesn't have any of the charm and story content of the original. Combat is also God awful in my opinion, it's neither here nor there. There isn't enough tactility to warrant use of the tactical camera and the regular hack and slash is dull.

I played 20 odd hours and all I can remember doing is collecting ore, herbs and setting up camps - none of the quest have struck me in such a way as the side quests from Origins (Werewolf quest, my God... so good) - Think I'll trade it in for a credit note.
  • Conversely, I just hit the 20 hour mark and the game spent the last two of those hours blowing me away. I'm now even more convinced that this is my game of 2014.

I've not played it in a while so all the intricacies aren't really fresh in my memory.

If you do pick a Mage, the melee specialisation sub-class doesn't become available until quite a way into the game. I only chose magic to begin with because the actual combat on these WoW 'hold-a-button-to-wail' types is pretty unsatisfying (imo), so I prefer to ogle at the pew-pew pyrotechnics instead.

Worth noting that you can switch and control your teammates on-the-fly, meaning you'll never get bored playing just one class (assuming you choose a varied bunch). I know a few peeps who restarted after dabbling with their team members, and ended up preferring that style of play. So feel free to experiment.

Other than that, just see how it goes. Be warned though that the game is fucking MASSIVE, and you'll likely spend the first 10-15 hours just wandering the Hinterlands, exploring and doing side-quests etc.

Now you've got me in the mood to play it. lol!

    Be vewy quiet...I'm hunting dwagons.

Ninety-five hours in and I'm still trucking but, quite rightly, fatigue is starting to set in.
    Get schwifty.
  • Ive seen a few dragons flying around in the distance but not actually encountered one yet. The closest I got was stumbling upon a dragon versus giant fight, I sat and watched ready to sweep in and battle whoever remained but the bloody dragon flew away!

He's a tough one, that one is.  Made me his bitch in our first encounter.  A rematch is imminent, methinks.  I'm feeling bullish after taking on three in a row in Emprise du Lion.

  • What sort of level is appropriate for taking on dragons? Or at least the first one?

    I'm only at 12 and I'm 30 hours in.

I honestly can't remember what level I was when I took on the Hinterlands dragon, but I reckon you have a reasonable chance at level 12.  Well worth it, they have excellent loot.

  • May have a go later, then.

I expect to be a pile of ash in no time.
  • I got mashed at level 14.
I managed the hinterland one by rocking 2 mages and Cassandra and just concentrating on one leg.

I'm starting get a little fatigued with this now, I've spent many many hours on it and it just keeps getting bigger and I'm also starting to despise the loot system and inventory.

  • So where is the dragon in the hinterland then?! Ive been around most of it but seem to have not encountered it...

The game really is massive. But I will just keep plugging away at it where and when I can.

  • I must have plugged 90hrs into this.  Never did get me a dragon. Really can't be arsed returning to it.

The long wait for Witcher 3 continues.
It wasn't until I hit my thirties that I realised you could unlock rewards by exploring the map

Never before have I played a game for 40+ hours and felt like I've done nothing. I actually thought I'd only played for a handful until I saw the count on the load screen. In another life, where I have all the time in the world to play games this would have been my dream adventure. But nowadays, I just don't have the time - I stopped playing MMOs for this very reason, and DA:I just keeps on reminding me of this. I know I said I was going to trade it a few posts ago, I stuck with it for awhile and it is good but I can't accommodate the time investment so I think I'll pop in and swap it for Lords of the Fallen or something.

I'm angling to finish it when I get home this weekend. I've (mostly) enjoyed my time with the game, but I'm ready to move on.

  • It is a real time sink. Even going into a smaller area just bombards you with stuff to do! My only criticism is that what you are doing is fairly repetitive and I would have liked some more interesting side quests.

  • I was enjoying this but there isn't enough time in the day to play it as well as Destiny.
  • I gave up on Destiny. I'll return when House of Wolves arrives.

This, however, is taking up most of my gaming time. I'm over 30 hours now and barely seem to have scratched the surface.

All ten high dragons are now dead high dragons.  Pretty much done everything in the Hissing Wastes.  Tomorrow I'll be making the final push with the main story.

Credits are rolling.  Suppose I must have enjoyed it quite a bit to spend in excess of one hundred hours on it.

  • How much of the game did you complete in that time Raiz? As in, was every area completely cleared of missions/collectibles.

I almost did everything.  I missed a very small amount of collectibles such as a few mosaic pieces and a couple of bottles of Thedes.  I also don't think I did Solas' inner circle quest, or at least I only did part of it.  I did keep returning to him but nothing came up and since I didn't want to use a walkthrough at any point I just left it at that.

  • Fair enough. It really is one hell of a timesink then.
Gamertag: aaroncupboard (like the room where you keep towels)
  • Right that's me done. Fatigue really set in so I raced through the last few story missions, though there are fewer of those than I thought there would be.
I didn't even go to the Hissing Wastes until after I'd finished the story and I didn't even realise it was a new region until I clicked on it by mistake. Which kind of illustrates my main problem with the game... It's too big and a lot of it is superfluous.
Still, its a good game, amazing value for money but it's not really pushing any envelopes of originality.
