I think the main problem with it is that it just doesn't feel much like Halo anymore. They sucked the joy out of it. Halo 3 is still leaps and bounds the better videogame.
The campaign is utter shite. I uninstalled the game about six months ago due to nobody playing it and it being way too harsh in MP.
They really didn't go with the 'cater to the pro gaming scene' or if they did they really didn't nail it. Assault rifles, radars, let alone sprint (which is the bane of a medium paced arena shooter), means that the competitive crowd weren't impressed with this. Also, for a LONG time the aiming was borked. It's still not great but they just released a patch which has improved it quite a bit. For ages it was only the competitive crowd that were complaining but eventually everyone else caught up and 343 eventually did something about it.
I've played a lot of it and think it's got a lot going for it, especially now they've partially fixed the aiming, and given us a playlist without the AR and where radar only activates when you use spartan abilities. However, it's done a terrible job of maintaining population and there are lots of good reasons why. Interestingly I suspect the core complaint is the same for casual and competitive folk, as a couple of people on here have said, the competitive crowd often say 'it no longer feels like Halo.'
I'd only play HCS if I could but it takes forever to find anyone. I do get the feeling watching streams that the likes of Ninja and Snipedown would much rather be playing H2A.
This really is dead here isn't it? Just started the campaign through Game Pass and had a brief go of the overwhelming MP a few months ago on the free weekend. Is there still life in the older dogs through back compatibility or MCC? They've done away with CTF too?
