Why this? I'm not looking for competition level quality, just a decent responsive stick that I can primarily use with MAME on Pi.

I found the buttons and stick responsive. Had no issues with it. It didn't cost much either if memory serves me - maybe £30 or thereabouts. I have a Hori EX2 360 stick which isn't bad either. My favourite is the stock Dreamcast stick - if you could get an adaptor for that it wouldn't be a bad choice at all. I have no idea what they cost now though - but I don't think they are expensive. The best type to go for though are those that are easy to mod without having to solder. It means you can easily upgrade buttons and the stick as you go along. You should probably have a look around for something like that.
