I liked Mark E Smith, in that he wasn't a careerist, didn't care very much about popularity, refused to even bother to sell himself most of the time, made occasionally great but always interesting records and could be pretty funny - plus he was scathing about almost every other musician. Which was nice.
In an age when everyone's selling themselves 24/7 it was nice to have someone who genuinely didn't give a fuck if you liked it or not and went out of his way to make his music as much of a hardsell as possible. I miss that attitude.
