Road to the Oscars 2018

Fairly poor list of films, from what I've seen. Billboards is good.

Which have you seen? I've seen 5 of them and three of them would get onto the list most years (Shape of Water, 3 Billboards, Call Me By Your Name), Dunkirk is Nolan so an Oscar shortlist gimme, whilst Get Out was pretty over-hyped imho, its nomination seems to be of our time. Haven't seen Lady Bird but heard very good things from people whose judgment I trust.

I probably think most years' lists are poor. But there's no way Get Out should be on there for a start.
  • If they give Best Picture to The Post there could be riots in the Hollywood Hills.
  • Only films iv seen of those are,
    Get out.
    Dunkirk.
    Three billboards.
(iv watched blade runner but fell asleep before it ended so not counting that despite enjoying what i did see, endings sometimes spoil my overall enjoyment of the film.)

3 billboards deserves lots of awards.
Blade runner should get visual plaudits.

    Other two are shit.

Il have to watch the others on my favourite ps4 browser pirate streaming service at some point.

Recomendations of order to watch in appreciated.

Edit: scrap that iv seen stophs post so il use that as a running order.

I'm with you on Get Out. Didn't click with it at all.

Noticed that too, it's pretty well represented at the razzies though (or whatever they're called)

Should have at least been up for director.

I liked Get Out a lot but it's weird to see it there.

I have seen Lady Bird. It's quite amusing but it's a nothing film. Instantly forgettable.

Dunkirk should get director and sound.

3 Billboards is best of those I've seen.

Dunkirk should get something for visuals and sound. Didn't think much of the film itself.

Get Out as best picture is shambolic tbh. Three Billboards leads the way but ima watch The Post on Friday, aka it got in because of three people and it's actually quite dull

This year's Spotlight. Call Be By Your Name is this year's Moonlight. Kinda.
  • Rockwell is excellent in Three Billboards, he's probably the most kinetic actor working today I can think to name, but Three Billboards misses a few marks for me.

How so? I won't offer anything in reply to your points, as is the norm, but I'm interested to read why.

Baby Driver - Paul Machliss & Jonathan Amos

Yeah boiiii. Worth it for that opening sequence alone!

Edit: what the fuck has happened here!?

    You failed to forum right.
  • Editing is all Baby Driver deserves, I thought it was totally soulless.

I like McDonagh, he's good. The 'redemption' of Dixon is one of his typically grey morality things that form the backbone of his work, but the baggage of race is too much for me, sadly. He goes out of his way to find the good in a character like Dixon but doesn't bother to write any decent black characters. Race is a sensitive topic in films and I felt Three Billboards missed the mark. I still enjoyed it, I just didn't like how it handled that stuff. Not looking to open a discussion on it either, which is why I don't visit yon film thread.

Your boi's too wide for normal text.

Has Streep won again? I've always found her half-character and half-Streep in everything she's done. Others see brilliance where I see Troy McClure.
  • Kevin Spacey should've got a nod for his outstanding portrayal of Christopher Plummer.

  • Note - those are not what I think should win. They’re purely based of guessing the way academy votes will go.
  • Was right on 3 of the 4 acting nods, and a fair few technicals. Happy about that.
  • I’m so far behind on films that I didn’t even know Del Toro, one of my favourite directors, did a new film.
