Interestingly, I didn't put 2 and 2 together, but his former stage name was lightspeed champion. Gave a couple of those a listen back in my days on Rdio.
A little more indy back then, like the first BO album, as I recall.
His current run of BO albums is sooo much quality.
I keep finding new gems in the lyrics, the arrangements, everything.
At the moment, the latest starts super strong for me, but then dwindles a little, but I'm holding out hope it'll grow.
Tool being back has me on the quest for new metal that doesn’t suck the big one (which is tough for me cos I generally don’t like vast swathes of the genre) but some friendly recommendation led me to the album ESOTERIC MALACOLOGY by Slugdge, a technical death metal band who write songs about cosmic slugs and stuff, and they make all of their song names slug puns like: Crop Killer, The Sound of Mucus, Salt Thrower, etc. Luckily they’re also incredibly accomplished musicians (though they are a bedroom band so have no drummer as of yet) and a good time beyond the admittedly entertaining premise
Death metal is a 90s thing. Can't imagine there being much worthwhile now, but then again I've never looked. Entombed's Left Hand Path and Cannibal Corpse are about the zenith of it for me.
Never specified Death Metal although I find splitting the genres very difficult to parse. I like it when metal gets a little proggy. I don't know the history but I doubt there's no good stuff being made now, I like Slugdge a lot after listening to their albums a few times.
Might just be because it's about cosmic slugs though.
I've always considered Deftones to be the peak of nu metal. They have more to them than most.
If you havent considered them, havent thought of them in awhile or found some of their hits too metal I would look at their newer stuff (Diamond Eyes onwards) and their "B sides and Rarities" album.
If that metal proggy place is what you want, then I've a lot of love for Gold Key, and Steve is recording bits for their second album as we speak, well maybe not right now, but last week and next definitely, or as soon as festival season finishes because that's busy days as an engineer. This one does sound very Deftones as well

I asked a couple of metal mates for modern recs a few months ago. I can't stomach the vocals in the majority of the stuff I've heard, despite often liking the way a band sounds, so the remit was specifically 'prominent lead guitar work and no scream-growling into the mic'. They came back with Valkyrie - and well done them - both albums are good, especially Shadows, which definitely scratched the itch.
Doom metal, apparently. I could chuck some words around to describe the sound as I hear it but I'd be talking out my arse. That doesn't usually stop me, so here goes anyway - classic inspired big riff sludge that's occasionally a wee bit Purplish and Skynrdy.
They've got the Baroness artwork guy to do the cover on Shadows:
Well worth a listen and it's only 7 tracks so there's no bloat.
Doom metal is where I find my metallic fixes nowadays, King Woman in partic.

All the metal talk reminded me that I no longer have any idea which subgenre is which any more, anyway my mate Phil gets some good reviews, so maybe this is up one of your streets
