U3 learns from the mistakes of 2 (bullet sponges / shit end boss etc) and mixes up the pace a bit more, that's why I prefer it to 2.
The dude on the train and the final boss on 2 are terrible. Didn't have any major issues with the end boss on the first game, it's my favourite because I played it first and fell in love with it. 2 and 3 are technically better, but 1 will always be by favourite.
Also, Crushing isn't that difficult on any of them, although I did cheat one section on the first and second games. Well worth the effort of playing through them all on Crushing in a similar way to how Halo is better on the harder settings.
Just started Uncharted 3 today and I agree that the pacing is just incredible. The chateux level in particular has been incredible. The game looks stunning, the climbing etc. is very good and the storyline is very filmic. The only thing that lets it down is the slightly dodgy gunplay. Otherwise excellent.

UC2's ending was horrible on reflection. Run round in circles shooting glowing things to explode then run round in circles again. It just took so bloody long. There wasn't much of an increase in difficulty between Hard and Crushing though. It's still the only one I've platinumed so far but I do want to do the other two one day. Though that section when you're locked in with the creatures on UC1 was just bloody annoying.
It is testament to the strength of the series that we have seen pretty much every possible order. Â In other franchises, there tends to be some consistency amongst fans as to the degree of quality of respective titles. Â You would at least expect there to be some consensus on the best, or least good. Â Not so with Uncharted.
Didn't like environments as much in 2, hated the fucking train bit - on top - and the characters were on the whole more annoying. The house, the boat and the plane with the sand makes it for me. Plus I had a much better time on the MP.
I thought I read for the third game, Nathan would automatically pick up ammo for the gun he was using. Â Running over ammo, stopping then going back for it is all a bit daft I have to say.
Finished UC3 again today, what must be my fourth or fifth play through. Very entertaining and still great fun. Here's hoping for some more Drake on PS4.
I still haven't managed to complete UC3. There are too many action sections where I don't really know whats going on. It's not like UC2 which seemed to just flow and I knew how to react. This one just see's me dying again and again.
The next generation doesn't start until MAG comes out.
I felt the combat's a bit tougher (+ less fun) than UC2 too.
There's always power weapons like RPGs to be found during the toughest encounters, once you find them it's much easier.
