There were a few of us on the old forum who liked cycling, but not enough to make any sort of dent in the Sport thread, so a new thread is our best option. The Giro Italia begins today with the usual Italian suspects (and Frank Schleck) out for the victory. Cav leads Team Sky and from looking at the stage profiles will probably win a hatful of stages before the brutal 3rd week.
In other news, Wiggins continues to dominate everything he enters after winning the tour of Romandie last week, which means I'm very excited for the Tour in July. Then obviously the Olympics will be awesome, gutted I didn't get velodrome tickets but will probably go and watch Cavendish win on the road.
Will anyone be taking an active interest in the giro this year?
What's Team Sky's team dynamic when the tour starts ? I take it wiggins is team leader and do you think it will effect cav's chances of stage wins - will they play it by ear depending how the stage is going ? And as renshaw isn't with team sky , who's cav's lead out man ?
As a keen Mtbiker I've heard of Cadel Evans for a while but never thought he'd have a chance , but watching the last few stages ( especially when he chased down schleck's break away and dragged others with him ) he fully deserved to win last year

Wiggo's progress is massively exciting, the team is looking in great form too, and the challengers are definitely on the ropes. I've got Wiggins as favourite.
Very much looking forward to it, although the Tour is the highlight for me. I've long cheered on Thomas Voeckler and his amazing performance in last year's Tour filled me with pride. Vive le Chou-Chou - and the Schleck boys!
So Cav won the 2nd stage of the Giro and Geraint Thomas was 2nd by 9 seconds in the 1st stage's prologue, British success in the sport at the moment is a pleasure to witness. I remember watching le tour back in the 90s/early 00s when the only Brits still competing during the 3rd week were struggling to avoid being eliminated.
I sold my cyclocross bike when I left England (for a pretty penny) and havent had a bike since I've been back.Â
I think I'm done with road bikes - they seem a little boring for where I live (no lovely cross-country B-roads to enjoy - only straight highways).
Anyway, so because I live in the Mecca of Mountain Biking, I really want to get an entry level MTB that I can use on the dozens of trails close to my house.
Can anyone point out the best brands, bikes, places to research? Any help would be much appreciated. I'm not even sure what I should be looking for - there is sooooo much choice.
I've been watching the Giro, these last 5 stages are going to be incredible. About 10 riders can still win the whole thing and Sky have 2 Columbians, Henao and Uran, who've been riding up with the favourites so far.
Yeah that was awesome. Great stage today, Hesjedal has been awesome thus far, hope the others are capable of attacking him tomorrow, if not the final tt will be a foregone conclusion.
I got the bike out of the shed for the first time in two years yesterday and was not only surprised that road-worthiness required nothing more than a little vigorous pumping but also that my legs survived unscathed a quick 3-mile test run. Only thing is, it's a 10 mile commute (each way) to where I normally work. Is that a lot to cycle?
Incidentally, this site seems to have provided me with an excellent route, which should avoid the worst of the rush-hour idiocy.
To clarify, I work just up the effing road. Â My fitness is a disgrace these days, largely courtesy of kids trumping sport for the last two years I think!
It's gotta be a road bike , I got my first one last year and with in a couple of rides realised I should've bought one years ago instead of putting slicks on my hard tail .
If you bought a hybrid , what would use it for ? Or just a more comfortable riding position ?

I'm in the same situation , I had to buy a light to go night riding on dartmoor but didn't tell her the full price - mind you I bought a vita got it delivered to my mums and wasn't gonna say anything but felt guilty whilst doing the dishes and told her - I even started to play my Psp so she wouldn't know the difference - how sad is that !!
