I'm surprised no-one has produced a clip on game pad for the iPhone which can take the place of touch controls, or at least one which has a decent level of support.
But haptic feedback seems to be what most companies are aiming for. I haven't used it myself so I don't know how much of a difference it'll make, but that seems to be the direction people are pushing in.
For now, just make games that are designed for use with a touchscreen, or stick to ports of games with simple controls. Canabalt and Super Hexagon are good examples of games that work well with touchscreen controls, PvZ works very well too, and Hundreds seems to have been designed from the ground up with touchscreen controls in mind.
Funnily enough, touchscreen controls are pissing me off right now... My mate thinks that the iPad screen is responsive enough to play piano on (or at least try out chords on), but I frankly can't type as well on one as I can on a normal keyboard. I really like the haptic screen idea that someone posted in the gadget thread... that would be a great improvement...

What will happen to Sony if they get the PS4/launch wrong?

is anyone going to watch the announcement tonight?

Massive inequality in sales leading Sony exclusive titles facing a huge barrier to overcome in terms of sales if they ever want to make it to the top of the all-format chart.
Well, they cocked up the PS3 which allowed MS to get a huuuge market share. They've been losing money for a long time now, so if the PS4 goes to shit as well I could see it being their last console, or even them stopping making the PS4 itself.
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
You mean the TV and console are then same piece of hardware? So you can't buy a bigger TV without getting a new console or move the console from one TV to another around the house? I'm not that fussed about that kind of thing, not enough flexibility.
Generally a stand alone TV is better than a TV with built in DVD player. I don't think people like conjoined hardware as you can't upgrade things as easily.
I have pretty much worked out that its pretty fucking tough to buy Nintendo in Russia. None of the big gaming shops of department stores sell Nintendo goods. In a month of being here i've not seen a single PSP or 3DS or anything other than a mobile phone - although everyone does seem to have S3's and IP's etc.
So whats with that? Does anyone know why? Are there other regions in the world where one of the major three are not present? I would expect in this day and age that all brands would feature in all major countries..

If there are a lot of pirate games around then the formats that can be easily pirated would become the popular ones.
Last gen certainly over here you'd find PS2s everywhere but no XBoxes or Gamecubes, simply because the DVD shops were full of pirated PS2 games. Now it's mostly PC stuff.
I've no idea what it's like in Russia though, so it may not be relevant.
masses of piracy here.. its a very good explanation, cheers

In Egypt, Xbox was virtually non-existent, not quite at nothing, but close. I think I had one student who'd even heard of the Halo franchise, and from what I could work out, even the shops who sold a handful of games for Xbox imported them off their own backs. I think Microsoft had simply decided that there wasn't enough money in the market to bother going for it.
Will MS pull something out of the bag with the launch of their new console?
(i'm not referring to rabits etc)
