Social media is a poisonous echo chamber and knocking it on the head isn't a bad idea. Good for keeping up with people you properly know but that's it as far as I'm concerned.

The specialist forum re meeting folk with common interests remains the prime vehicle as far as I'm concerned.    Here, shmups.com, sega-saturn UK , atariage and retrovideogamer are the only fora (is that right?) I frequent but this is by far my primary resource.  FB groups, discords etc don't really do it for me. I am a member of a Northern Ireland retro collector FB group but that's it.

FB groups can be good for buy, sell swap - a decent sub for eBay but not for real informed opinion and discussion.

My other interests are largely catered for here - re film, reading, nerd apollo/space, popular science, nerd software dev etc I find this place enough. It's a broad church of opinion on all matters and is a healthy and valuable resource. 

Here's the only online social place I find of any value to be honest. It's genuine because it's progressed to what it is naturally. Given that even here we get rows it just shows how bad online can be with its endemic issues with detection of tone etc.
