I was in exactly the same boat. Finished it last night. Just blasted through paying no mind to any side stuff.
Coming off the back of TLOU 1, I would say it makes sense to take some time and reflect on the game. Might make the passage of time more effective when going into TLOU 2....or I might be talking total bollocks. Not sure.
All I'll say is it helps to be emotionally invested in the characters. Oh and I would recommend playing the Left Behind DLC for TLOU 1 first. It fleshes out Ellie's character even more.
