I do remember a kid at school saw me with my Walkman on a field trip and wanted to swap tapes, he had some blur album and I had White Zombies Astro creep 2000 (I just nicked everything from my brother at the time).
I didn’t mind it but he wasn’t pleased and swapped back after 2 songs.

I reckon there’s an argument to be made that Rage against the Machine were the first nu metal band, although I suspect that most people would say it was Korn.
