What is the most DVDish DVD.
  • Haha yes.

Cartridges (Console) - Super Streetfighter II: Turbo Edition (US Import)

Bonus points if it comes in The Tin.

    Right let’s do this properly.

    CD - Nirvana - Nevermind
Vinyl LP - Prince - Purple Rain
VHS - Return of The Jedi
    DVD - Blade
    PC CD-Rom - X-Wing vs Tie Fighter
Blu-Ray - Never really cared about Blu-Ray - I’d already started to buy digital content at this time.
HD-DVD - Ha ha ha - I came very close to buying one.
mp3 - I’d bought about a hundred singles but first album was To The Five Burroughs - The Beastie Boys
Streaming Video - Pornhub - I honestly can’t think of my main Netflix experience. Before that I’d bought Band of Brothers on Apple and streamed it nearly every year.
Cartridges (Console) - Super Streetfighter II: Turbo Edition (US Import)
    Cartridges (Handheld) - Advance Wars
    Disc console - Tekken
Tapes - The Top 40 on a Sunday

No it was actually from Curry’s (Comet maybe?) who were selling them, I kid you not, under the counter. He literally went into a cupboard under the counter and it was mine for the princely sum of £60.

There’s something about VHS that has a slight tinge of seediness - maybe it was the combination of the idea of Pirate video or the way you could sneak a look at boob in the dirty Blockbuster equivalent. I feel like buying from foreign markets sort of falls into that - this idea you need to circumvent our law to get it.

heh. yeah. Indie video libraries had a seedy feel to them. One I went to was a room out the back of a newsagent with no windows. The availability of porn was one reason but it wasn't all down to that. The battered cases on the shelves - the plain box you got to take it home in.  The amount of ropey old crap you would get if you weren't careful - you only had the box cover to go by or word of mouth if a film hadn't been in the cinema. :)

It being an analogue medium the state of the tape, the build quality of the player and your CRT TV's tuner mattered too. I remember fucking about with the tracking and the tuner on the TV to get the best picture I could. That grainy, blurry look adds to the sense of grimyness.

Pirate videos in the early days were a waste of time - the quality was really low. I remember a mate boasting about a pirate of ET he had - I came around to see it and it was unwatchable so I passed. Once organised crime got involved (IRA,UVF et al over here) the quality improved.....

DVD for me probably isn't the 'definitive' example of the format, but it's the one that I remember the most. 'Fight Club' R1 version from 2000. It was one of the first DVDs I ever bought, from a long defunct US site thanks to vouchers I got doing the reel.com quiz every day (getting the answers I didn't have from the 709Online forum (which was itself a fansite for one of the first easily region hackable DVD players))

Great 2 DVD release with a special packaging, and I think there were 4 commentaries on the main movie. Unlike a lot of people I have always enjoyed listening to a commentary - a lot are absolute pap of course, but you get some real gems.

  • I grew up around so so much music I can’t say there’s ‘one’ that sticks to mind. I remember the only tape in my mums car was the white album so we sang to that a lot at school drop-offs/pick-ups.

Yup. Has loads of those. Battle Royale, Ichi the Killer, Audition…

Battle Royale in a tin. Oh my!

I still have my R1 Criterion DVDs even though they’ll look dogshit on current setup.

  • Dunno about most DVDish DVD for me, but among my very first purchases were Scream and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. So maybe those?

Digipack stuff also comes to mind. Warner Bros used to do great ones. Such as Amadeus and One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Fight Club was one of my favourites, so was Memento. Lots of Easter eggs and shit. Once Upon a Time in the West was great.

  • Re importing, I did loads too. A lot of R1 Criterions which I still have. Mostly Kurosawa.

Plus fond memories of hunting down Ghibli boxset from China and also Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (aka Spirited Away). I still have the Ghibli boxset with handwritten note on which disk is which film in English.

I have the Bladerunner DVD special release in a tin. Has a flying car key ring, art cards (of concept art - actually rather nice for once) and one of those animated cell thingummies. There's a letter from Ridley Scott, printed on transparent space-agey plasticy "page". One of the few special editions that appeared to be worthwhile.

Did early DVDs come with special features for PC drives or am I thinking of CDs?

Some DVDs had press kits that were a PC/Mac browsable folder with various "multimedia" artifacts like scripts, poster artwork and the like.

Some just had a weblink embedded in them..

Just remembered 1977 by Ash, quality CDage for the reasons of excellent hidden track usage. There were three hidden tracks on the album, one after a period of silence at the end (although it’s just a recording of the band throwing up), two more if you skip backwards from the first track.
