I think I'm fucking something up. I've only really just left the main town, with the quest "get a permit to cross the border". Random plebs in the field can decimate me. The Saliva (think Piranha Plant from Mario games) is particularly brutal. It has a counter that reduces my entire party to 1HP, and then it just picks me off at it's leisure. My current healing abilities only put me back at about 25% health, which is still in one-shot range of the plant's other attacks.

Most folks have only got their starting gear. All SP is spent - at least, I think so. It won't let me buy anything. There was a bottleneck in the map where I had to pass one of them. I got lucky and it didn't use the counter move until I had almost beaten it anyway. But now I'm up against some purple frog geezer, and he can one shot any character in my party.
By jumping on their head.
With his arse.
Which is just adding insult to injury.

I think it's one of those times where the enemies are purposefully difficult to stop you going in that area. That permit quest is a real dog, it nearly made me stop playing the game altogether which would have been a real shame. It does get better, I promise.
You should have better weapons for everyone by now, and have been able to upgrade them at least once. You've definitely got access to a couple of shops and anvils. Are you using the reward board thing on the left trigger to get a boost in materials? And using Sienna to steal from every monster to see what you get?
How do I not trigger the counter attack? Because I used the same tactics each time and managed to win on the third attempt. It seems more random than something I’m triggering.

I've lost track of the number of times I've gone between point A and point B in the "get the passes to cross the border" quest. There's back tracking and then there's this. You go through the same area fewer times in Metroidvania games.
Now I have to fight some geezer's body guards... and I don't have a snowball's chance in hell. I'm doing 60 to 120 damage per hit, and they're doing 10, but I don't seem to be whittling their health bars down at all. My best run so far I took out two of the four, and then that was it. It's a war of attrition and they've got a bajillion hit points.
Not sure I have the patience for this.

That back and forth for the pass is a bit shit tbf. I remember thinking if I was in a worse mood at that point I may have binned it off.
I cant remember that battle exactly but cant recall a feeling of attrition.
Only thing I can suggest is checking their weakness if you haven't already.
Yeah, thinking about it I do remember them guys being a bit tanky. I beat them first go but they took a while, longer than felt right.
Cant suggest anything specific.
Just remember your Ultra move and maybe use it with Glenn, utilise Victor's buffing skills then if you have poison or bleed get that going. Focus on clearling them one by one.
Good luck Swirl. I have to admit I don't think I was finding it as challenging as you are at that stage, so if you're still having trouble then give your party set up, skills, that you're using tp points and all that and we'll see if something is amiss.
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
There's plenty to miss. I spent a few fights with three in the fight and three in reserve waiting to switch in before realizing it's better to have four constantly in the fight
