Didn't get the heart pumping but I wasn't looking for that, nice pallet cleanser from all the explosive stuff. Dunno what people hoying things anywhere and everywhere got out of it mind

Since then, we've got used to the idea that videogames are a broad church, and it's not done anyone any harm.stonechalice wrote:A videogame is something you play. With a controller or mouse or whatever. Something that gets the pulse going, some reflexes required here and there. I'm definitely more of an action fan which sways my opinion of course. I just don't know how you can put Unpacking in the same boat as a game like Returnal. We almost need a new description for 'videogames' like Unpacking.
The medium is much more interesting for it, more varied, imaginative and more attractive to a wider range of developers and players. And at the same time, the range of 'proper' games is probably greater than ever.
This reminds me of the problems I had with Edith Finch, because just about everything that made it a game was poorly executed and detracted from the overall experience and narrative they were going for. I think it's less about "is this even a game" and more about "why is this a game" when it would be better served in another form

The way it weaves the vague story it tells into the game itself is doing thatstonechalice wrote:Unpacking is almost like a browser game. It's mildly diverting and briefly thought provoking. Is it pushing the medium forward in any way and really exciting to play like a good videogame should be?? Not at all. There are people out there that might go out and buy that game off the back of Eurogamer's GOTY list and be dismayed. It boils down to what Gerstmann was saying about what reviews even are anymore I suppose...

Why care though? You can have your own goty in your head, doesn't matter what complete strangers voted on. I'm quite happy with my games of the year list, because it's perfect.

A deck-building game...

Its a brave man who would dismiss the entire adventure game genre as 'not a game'. Maybe thats why Broken Sword had that fucking goat puzzle.

Absolutely fucking not.

I'm Not as much as previous years. Recently the podcast has felt like Jeff G's show with occasional input from others.
Nextlander ones have been good though.

Yeah, I get that. I'm far from a total convert to this sort of thing. I know that some people like playing games just for the story, though, and get something out of the interaction even when it's just a case of moving through a world.Paul the sparky wrote:This reminds me of the problems I had with Edith Finch, because just about everything that made it a game was poorly executed and detracted from the overall experience and narrative they were going for. I deleted them. Well, technically I edited them so they contain only bold tags, and appear blank. I’m sure you could’ve worked that out.
