I taught Psychic and Thunder to my Starmie so he covers multiple bases, I've just done gym 7. I seem to always favour steel pokemon so I'm usually vulnerable to fire, my brother has an Arcanine that I need to take out straight away.
I think in 1337 world, a sweeper is the poke who builds up stats with calm mind etc and then kills the enemy in one hit, and does that for the entre team.
@TheDJR Make Heracross your sweeper. Can't Heracross learn Reversal? Does more damage the lower the HP? Devastating on a 'mon with an attack as high as that.
So just when I think I am done with Pokemon, Nintendo go & drop X & Y into the mix. Not quite the annoucement I was hoping for(MMORPG is the dream) but enough to tempt back to the series.
I have played all the main games from original Red to DS Black. The only one I did not finish was Soul Silver & for my shame my trainer is in the cave just before Victory Road. Black brought just enough freshness to the table to make me take the plunge again.
I have never been a fan of the contest guff etc just all about nailing the Gyms & E4. I have battled online on all the DS games & I only play 1v1. All the other modes just bring new planning headaches to my aging brain. I used to be ok at online battles, but to beat the top dogs just requires to much input. Breeding for specific natures/moves, grinding, IV/EV calculations, grinding some moaaaaaaaaaar against certain types just to grab those increases in EV's for certain stats. I just dont have the time for such dedication, infact I have never had the time "to be the very best."
This game & the new Monster Hunter game will finally make upgrade my 3DS to an XL i'm sure.
My last online team on Black was Sigilyph, Volcarona, Swampert, Jolteon, Tyranitar(with Ghost move, bloody effort that was) & a Entei.
Below is a pic of my Poke tin of Shame/glory. I hate to think how many times I have moved 'mon from old game to new game. *shudders* I also still have my Original Red in the game box in the loft.
When I went to a StreetPass event after White/Black 2 came out there was a guy who'd done EV training, he seemed to think it wasn't necessarily that time-consuming these days.

Turns out that between White 2/Black 2 and the companion 3DS game Pokemon Dream Radar you can actually get all the non-event Generation IV legendaries. I'd say it would save you buying those but actually you need to have the cards inserted while playing Dream Radar to get some of the legendaries.

EV training must completely suck out any joy from the game. Saying that, just got 12 Pokemon up to level 40 which is the cap for my next battle with my brother, need to win!
EV training is not to bad(still a ball ache) if you know what ya need & where to go. Its all the bloody prep before you even get to that stage, then trying to start it as close to lvl 1 as poss without OD'ing on Rare Candies(shit increases on your stats), & then repeating the whole thing again for rest of your team. Even with a traded 'mon, it still a mountain, as Temps said, only mentals/pro's climb, but without doing ze grind, your fecked against top players.
Pokerus & traded is the way to go, but still, its a fuckton of planning/breeding/collecting/hatching/IV checking before you even go down that road.
Anyone here ever hit gold with a shiney or caught a 'mon with Pokerus? Â During the span of 9 games of the main series, GB to DS I have only caught one shiney, A Eevee & have never captured one carrying the Pokerus virus.
