The Whisky thread
  • Diff’rent strokes for different folks etc. I used to drink regularly, now I’m out of the habit. Mrs poprock still sometimes talks about how much I used to drink in a ‘you used to really put it away’ kind of way.

Her sisters were staying with us over the weekend and it’s a shocker how much they drank, and do multiple times a week - but we used to join in. Now we don’t. When her sister talks about ‘I think I had at least 12 pints on Friday, but that’s only the ones from my bill, I know I bought some with cash as well and some other people bought me drinks too’ …
  • My dad's mum was a whisky drinker too, she used to guzzle it with ginger wine which is an absolute leg trembler of a drink for most people. Must've not skipped a generation then skipped one for me, if I drank what my dad put away on Saturday there's a chance I wouldn't have pulled through.
  • My drinking has increased since the pandemic started, living alone & everywhere shut meant not really much to do at the weekend other than get sozzled. Problem is your tolerance increases, so you very easily find yourself drinking more without really getting 'drunker' than you used to. In my experience, anyway. Supping on whiskey all day it's v.easy to go through a whole bottle over a weekend, so I'm not surprised Moot Snr. can put it away when in the mood - when I retire I'll likely be similar. Part of me thinks, if it's not affecting a) your work, b) your family or c) your finances negatively, then what's the problem? But, the problem ofc is health, it's not healthy at all.

I'm trying to get out and do things at weekends now instead, like I used to pre-pandemic (now that things have opened up), but it's definitely something I need to keep an eye on. Idle hands etc. I'll always be fond of a pint but before all this covid stuff I'd be out with the gf/fwb at the weekend for the most part, which kept me honest. The darkest days of lockdown tho, long weekends with nothing to do, dangerous.

I've always been a social drinker. It was always in a pub for many years. I still don't drink much at home. I only drink at home when we have people over. Very occasionally I'll have a beer or a single malt at weekends but that's it.

When I was younger I drank a lot. My weekend started on Thursday night. Sunday nights went dry when I started working though. A night out then would be considered a binge nowadays of course.

When I started working Friday sessions started early though - straight after work and around pay day it might have started at lunchtime. Wifey took a lot too but we knocked it on the head once kids came along and I haven't ever gone back to that level. We are now actual social drinkers and rarely drink until drunk now.

Of course we still get drunk on occasions but it's usually with company / post restaurant visit.

After my weight loss (23st to 17) I lost my capacity as well and got caught out a couple of times but I've adjusted.  I can still put away 10 pints or a half bottle of whiskey but those are single session affairs - no way I would do that consecutive days.

Was out yesterday (off work) with Wifey and visitors and we hit 9 pubs and I doubled up in a couple. The visitors were very wobbly but I was fine. I still have the constitution but nothing like what I was like 30 years ago.

When you have a constitution for it the danger is not easing off as you get older. I tend to change what I drink too as specialising in a drink is a path to taking far too much too often.

  • Just back from the new Lagg distillery on Arran, where they're in the process of making peated malt - which their sister distillery in Lochranza (the OG Arran distillery) doesn't do as a matter of course. It's a very fancy installation with a fantastic cafe, bar and gift shop (which sells the full range of Arran malts). Didn't do the tour but bought this lovely sherry cask finished dram.

  • Going to Scotland and visiting a distillery is on my list. Your pics make it look simply fabulous, especially with that weather.
Carry on enjoying and letting us see the sights, pls!
  • Planning on doing a distillery tour with some mates for my 40th next year, although we’re not very well organised yet. That looks grand.

  • If you are doing a distillery trip and like peaty whiskies then I recommend Islay.  Lots of distilleries in a small space.  Lagavulin, Laphroaig, and Ardbeg are right next to each other.  Caol Ila and Bunnahabain are close to each other on the north east of the island with spectacular views over to Jura.  Bowmore, Kilchoman, and Bruichladdich are on their own but do interesting tours and tastings.  Not sure if Port Ellen is up and running again yet.

Quite a few distilleries now do expanded tastings where you get to try some really interesting stuff although be warned, it can get messy.

Stayed in the village of Bushmills this weekend. It has a very nice hotel with renowned restaurant. 25 years married. Had a whiskey flight in the bar, consisting of Black Bush, 10yo malt, then a special Distillery malt at 12yo. Comes in 3 tasting glasses. Noice. The distillery special is worth looking out for at £45.

  • Step dad turns 70 in a week.  I'm looking for a recommendation for something interesting under £50.  Nothing mad peaty but aside from that anything goes.  He's not a SMWS fan so my usual plan isn't going to work this time.  Any thoughts/suggestions/advice gratefully received.

Edit:  I'm currently looking at the Glenfarclas 105 but can easily be swayed.
  • I’d go Glenfarclas 15 if it’s for a gift.

  • The 105 is 90 better than the 15.
  • Glenfarclas 105 every time.

Also, here is my usual pitch for Arran whisky - the Bodega or The Bothy are both brilliant.

Some pics taken from the little Whisk(e)y Tasting Night I hosted for a few friends.

Did these in order. The last one shouldn't have been included as our palates weren't exactly on song and I have no memory of actually drinking it  :(

We tried Gentleman Jack after the JD Single Barrel - Gentleman Jack is a far better drink.

There were lagers for ballast available and we played a 6ft long table-top curling game between drinks which was great fun.

Water was Evian at room temperature served from ceramic jugs.

    Miles Davis provided the music.

  • Nice. Single Barrel used to be like £50 years back and pretty hard to get hold of. Since it went more mass market it’s dropped significantly in quality. I think I still prefer it to gentleman Jack though.

Yeah - JD:SB isn't expensive now so maybe there's a reason for that. It's a good drink with a splash of water but I just find GentJack to be smoother.

I haven't had it for a while, probably because of a similar warning from you in the past, but I used to really like it.  Never tried Gentleman Jack.

Can't remember if it was the JD or Jim Bean Rye I didn't particularly like.  In fact, when it comes to Rye I've decided there's not much point in experimenting because Bulleit Rye exists, and is affordable (although oddly I don't think much of their bourbon).
