Apologies if this has been posted before. I stumbled on this guy's channel on YouTube. According to his bio he's a founder of TT Games, and has spent 30 years programming, with a lot of that on SEGA hardware.

  • Nice, got a soft spot for Batman and Robin, even thought it's nigh on impossible without cheating. Great soundtrack too (super similar sound to Red Zone).

Jeez ...  Sonic R was a symphony of code. Parallel assembler? Wow.  I did some DSP programming when I was on my year in industry but I had a parallel FORTRAN compiler for matrix operations which operated on all elements at the same time.  Most of my year was doing parallel procedural coding on transputer networks using Occam 2.

That was bad enough......I can't imagine how hard it must have been to get synchronised.

Joyous bit of gameplay last night. Manx TT Superbike on the Saturn. 3D controller. Sitting up close to the CRT. First person view.

Marvellous.  The game was a disgrace as a full price game with only 2 tracks but it's glorious nowadays.  It has that real Sega craft. Silky controls. Looks rough of course but that's part of the charm. The draw in is limited to track side detail and it's not harmful to the experience.

Must see if I can get it running on the the model 2 emu. Have Sega Rally running on that.

Me being 10secs a lap off the pace to make it onto the bottom of the records table. :)

  • I do like a bit of the amusingly named Sega Lord X on Youtube.  It's fairly basic stuff - kinda how games journalism was in the era he specialises in - but he sure knows his onions.

Currently watching Ugly Sega Saturn Games, love it.  The absolute state of Time Commando.

  • Ha ha, brilliant I enjoyed that cheers. You should try out Time Commando one retro week, although I apprecite Saturn Emulation is patchy at best.

I actually enjoyed Touring Car and didn't think it was that ugly tbf.

He does more on Sonic R. The Saturn couldn't do environment mapping (shiny surfaces), but he managed to find a solution.

  • I've been neglecting retro gaming recently (hard to find time between the indies I can't stop playing), so I'm considering either taking the plunge with yet another handheld device, or finally hacking the Vita. I'm staring down the barrel of a 4hr daily commute as a permanent thing, so train gaming will be essential. I still have a PSP but I never rated the emulation quality on that, it's mostly a case of almost but not quite.

The Anbernic RG351M looks like a lovely bit of kit, anyone had any experience with the range?
  • I had a hard time finding Vita-specific emulators. Ended up emulating a PSP on the Vita and running the PSP emulators through that. GBA games have never properly worked, SNES is usually ok, MD ok too. But there's often some little thing that goes wrong, some audio bit that comes out crunchy or graphical glitches.
  • 3DS is bloody awful for emulation as well and it takes about a day to go through all the steps for hacking it. Plays GBA games natively though once done. Absolute gravy when you get that up and running.
  • I sold my 3DS, not that I'd be able to stomach more than 25 minutes of haxxing. I'm thinking shiny new machine tbh, might sell the Vita to part fund it.
  • I'm making do on the hacked handhelds until some kind of dream machine comes along. Something like a Steam Deck with Windows that can run whatever emulators a PC can run. Steam Deck is nearly there but those button placements seem like a deal breaker. I need a little info of how people are getting on with those after release as well.
  • The pipe dream is functional handheld Saturn emulation for me, would pay all the monies. That's probably a few years off though.

I guess the Analogue Pocket will be able to run a bunch of stuff as it will have that additional core that's open to developers or whatever it was. Expensive and won't be able to play modern stuff like a hacked Vita though. And again, Saturn is a generation off (someone's at least working on an FPGA core though).

Not retail, but I saw this the other day:

Print edition available.  Focuses on a specific year per issue.  Could be right up my alley.
  • Nice find Moot, I have just gone balls deep and ordered print copies for issues 1 & 2.

I'm all for this just hope it's interesting!!

I'm considering taking the plunge and getting an OSSC with the aim to ditch the CRTs.  HAs anyone made that leap?
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • Yes I have, you can pick them up relatively cheap now as people are jumping on the Retrotink 5x train or waiting for the OSSC Pro.

I'm really happy with mine from videogame perfection. My initial unit had an issue with tge audio which they resolved straight away.

    https://videogameperfection.com/products/open-source-scan-converter/

As it's open source you can pick them up much cheaper from Aliexpress (£70) and lots of people have, but just be aware if it goes kaput you'll have very little come back.

  • I haven't had a CRT for about 12 years now.

I've had various alternatives including a retron5, but never dabbled with OSSC units.

I've basically settled on modded mini consoles now and a HDMI Adapter for my RGB modded N64 with an Everdrive.

I did treat myself to the Super NT though, as the SNES is my main collecting console. Will report more on that soon.

Also remember that without CRTs light gun games are useless.

Yeah. I have 2 CRTs. Have a nice 4:3 21" Panasonic. It's currently rotated for shmups. The other is a Samsung 4:3 25". A 25" 4:3 is quite a big screen. It's great! :)    My daughters (in their early 20s) can hear a squeal off the CRTs though.... I don't but that is a concern. They also take up a fair bit of room.

Both have brilliant picture. Lovely vibrant colour. Losing light gun games wouldn't really be a problem as I don't play them that often. VC1&2 on Saturn, HOTD2 on DC and Confidential Mission on DC is all I have.

At the price they are I could afford to audition an OSSC and see how it works but I'd consider holding onto the smaller CRT for shmups.

My PC has a 25" widescreen monitor on a rotatable stand and I can play my TATE Steam and MAME shmups on that and I'm more than happy with it. I'm betting I'd be happy with an OSSC.

Does the OSSC work with any RGB SCART source? I think I remember something about synch signals required or needing it stripped?
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • Works on all mine and my JPN Saturn has sync on Luma. The only problem I have is with the Jaguar and I haven't got to the bottom of that one yet other than resetting things in different orders!

  • You can also buy the Koryuu which deals with Svideo and composite, its a companion piece for the ossc but it ups the price a bit.
    https://videogameperfection.com/products/koryuu-transcoder/

I was tempted but think Ill wait until the Retrotink 5x becomes more easily available.

Nice. Cheers for the info.  I have my J-N64 RGB modified so I'd be able to try that out too. The only console that is s-video is my J-Gamecube.

Thinking about it now I was probably remembering the xrgb mini requiring an adaptor for EU RGB SCART.
