ASUS are like that. They had me send a faulty tablet to a contractor that seemed very ‘general IT’ and unspecialised, who returned it unfixed a week later. I contacted them and went through the process again, and that time it came back with its fault just occurring less frequently.

The company Argos used when I returned a faulty laptop were surprisingly good.

So the Steam Deck is delayed until February at earliest. Good, as it's an expense I can cross off my list for the moment.

Happy to be in the second batch, want to get some hands-on in depth reviews, especially around noise from fans, that’s the one thing making me consider not buying.
  • For computationally intensive games the fans will probably be fairly audible I would imagine, but not much of an issue if you use headphones. For light stuff I reckon heat/battery life will be much nicer.

Well there are fans and there are fans. I'd be happy if it sounds like a Switch or PS5 fan, absolutely not if it is PC laptop levels. I don't play my laptop that much simply because I have to use headphones.
  • Had a rando pc custom build ad pop up on fb, get loads on twitter too.

I genuinely do not understand the obsession with the fluro lights.

I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Infra is utter pish, I wouldn't recommend it even at the sale price.
  • Noob question.

Should I be using a mouse mat for gaming?  I've only ever just used the desk surface but I find myself unable to make small adjustments to my aim.  Sometimes I'm hungry, or the heating might not be on so I assume it's just something like that.  But I see people making pixel sized adjustments and I can't do that at the best of times.

I also have a cheap gaming mouse so that will probably play a part.  And I'm shit, so there's that.
  • Nfi. I play card games.

I got one last year. Improved my aiming and stuff massively. Plus the completely smooth, comfy surface feels good. Was like 20 quid for a big one.
  • Big ol desk mat is bestest. And yeah a good quality mouse with a proper sensor is one of the most important things to have with PC gaming. You don't have to spend a lot and more often than not mice will have sensors that don't have any accceleration or other weird issues now. I used to have this old Mionix mouse that I thought was really good, but it was genuinely making playing games rubbish due to some built in negative acceleration and I didn't realise for years.

Make sure you get a big mouse mat, or just a desk mat, so you have the option of turning the in game sensitivity down. This makes it easier to be more accurate because you can make larger movements for the same effect, getting lined up on a specific pixel has a greater margin of error.

Also I hope everyone has "Enhance pointer precision" turned off in their Windows mouse settings, it's just acceleration which is bad for consistent aiming and pointing.

My arm and wrist would hate me if I did this; been a relatively high DPI player since 2000, learnt to use every millimeter to its fullest, fastest advantage. Which is easier now than ever since quality mice are in abundance.

On another note, finally got a secondary NVMe drive during black friday so I can try out Game Pass without having to worry about the Xbox app bricking my C drive. 10 sek (1 euro) for three months is quite alright.

Got horizon zero dawn cheap on fanatical and it came with a free mystery game. Looks like a nice looking point and click puzzler.

Let's do this again: I have spare humble keys to Katana Zero, Bloodstained, Elex (eurojanky RPG darling) and Heaven's Vault if anyone's interested.

  • I hate to do it, but wow. Elex is really jank. I tried. But didn't last the first town.

  • I've not played it, but the rest of those are all worth a go.
  • Yes. True.

So I got a USB controller to use with my Switch, thinking it'd also work with my laptop. Turns out I was correct. Only problem is that Steam sees it as an Xbox controller, and reverses the A/B and X/Y buttons. I've had a dig around in the settings and tried telling Steam that I want to use the Nintendo layout, but games still think that the A button is the one labelled B. What am I missing?

  • My son finally gets his gaming pc next week for his birthday (I bought it 2 months back, thanks everyone for your help on here).

It should be an absolute beast of a machine, so I’m excited to get game pass on the go and give some xbox stuff a try.
  • You need the game to support the correct button prompts. The USB adaptor and steam are doing their job, it's just Nintendo and XBOX label the buttons differently.

If the game does't support Switch buttons (and let's face it, who'd want to use junk switch controllers on a pc), you need to train you brain (like I do when using a decent controller on a switch). I think of the order of the buttons - A then B or B then A, and X then Y or Y then X in my head when I see a prompt.

Steam allows controller config outside the game. I've had to use that with old PC games that won't recognise newer controllers (Raiden III for example). You configure the game to use keyboard in its own config and then you use the Steam client to map controller buttons onto the keyboard, matching them up.

Of course that won't work with analogue controls or games that don't support keyboard - but surely most modern game have a good control config to give you what you want??
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.

That'd be why I want to change the layout, yes.

  • So either use games that support the switch layout , or open the switch controller and swap the buttons over.

Won't help much with + and - though.

Do you have a DS4? Use that (as it's superior in every way) and a lot of games support the PS labels.

The Switch Pro controller is better than the ds4, except for lack of analogue in the triggers.
  • It's worse in every way - dpad (I guess you've never used the dpad then), analogue sticks, triggers. Even the buttons are slightly worse.

I think that is the best you can get in most cases, unfortunately, which is why I turned the option off again in the end. A lot of games just don't include Switch Pro prompts.
  • Nintendo and MS really need to get together and come to an agreement on the button labels.
perhaps bill gates and Shigs can play rock, paper, scissors head to head live at the next e3 to decide who keeps their current layout?
Sony have to follow suit with whoever wins

Nintendo went first. Sony did their own thing. Microsoft fucked it by using the same names but in different places. Inexcusable.
