I’m bringing this thread back to share a lovely piece of writing in Vittles on the near-religious attachment to blue roll that people in the food and drink trade feel.
I don’t think the writer went quite hard enough on how much of an ‘us and them’ signifier blue roll is though. If you’ve never worked in a kitchen, or behind a bar, or in service in some way … you probably won’t get it. Reaching for the blue roll puts you on one side of a class divide, for life.
