That documentary looks interesting. Anyone got a Blackbeard link they can share with ol' tigerswiftly?
I used to love designing boardgames as a youngster. This basically involved ripping off games I already had and tweaking the rules, but still... fond memories.
The doc was surprisingly brilliant. A lot of coverage of Essen and its mega fuck off huge show. I had no idea boardgames were still played so often by so many. Really felt for one chap who'd been trying to get his game out for four years, only to see one company pass and another go into liquidation. Seemed quite interesting, based on The Great Wall of China. A lot of Monopoly bashing by the elitists, and a ton of Catan love.
Also, check the beard yo:
Tiger, I'd up it but it's about 850mb on my 100kb/s upload.
A lot of love for Friedemann Friese and his wacky hair, and Reiner Knizia who they state is the modern Godfather of boardgames. He does it in a very cold, calculated, German style. They'll literally make a game out of anything Also, Rio Grande Games seems the bomb.
Hasn't spurred me on to play, but t'was a wonderful glimpse into the life of a fair few normals and neckbeards.
Yeah, they always tend to be a bit dry though haha. Knizia did Samurai which I'm desperate to find people to play with one day. It's the war game, or so I've heard.
Yep, they hit a rich seam with that one, endlessly modular and tons of interesting ideas going around. All the fun of Magic but without the faff of building a deck via boosters for years.
Has anyone played Small World? I'm looking for something to dig into over Christmas and it looks a little bit less intimidating - and cheaper - than Mage Knight.
EDIT: Might pick up Ticket to Ride: Europe as well. My dad likes trains. Might go down a bit better than Ogres and Dwarves.
EDIT AGAIN FUCK YEAH: Dixit sounds like a wonderful game. Has anyone played that?
@Tiger Small World is great, how many people are you going to be playing it with? It works better with more people as it gets more hectic and the world feels 'smaller'.
The rules are super simple, just make sure you go through them clinically to avoid missing opportunities for people to score and do a little bit of reading around some of the special abilities and such as they can seem a little complicated at first.
Go on dropbox, make free account (you get about 2/3 gig or summat free), PM me details (url, or pass/user if added) and I up. I'd use Ollie's but its nearly a gig in size.
Tempy, I'll give you the details as well. It can be like our very own secret club.
Regarding Small World, I'd probably be trying to get a few games in over Christmas, so 4-5 players possibly. Looks like it could be great fun. I'm really excited to try Dixit now. It looks fantastic.
Going Cardboard was great! Bit of a love in but what's not to love.
So glad I've a board game day lined up for tomorrow, extremely pumped for it now.
Have to echo the sentiment at the end of the doc. Board games just make it a better place to be.
Ever since I started playing with my family we've spent much more time together than we ever did before. It's a brilliant hobby to get in to. If you're on the fence, pick up Ticket to Ride over the Christmas and have an absolutely brilliant time.
