Hippa to da Hoppa, you just don't stoppa
  • I didn't even know they had a music category.

Very late to the playlists.  DJ Krush track is good, strong in all areas.  I've got that Ozomatli album, always good to hear Chali 2na on anything tbh.  Disagree hard with Face with the Chali 2meh thing - he absolutely always sounds good, even when he phones it in (not here - on a lot of his own tracks, unfortunately).  He could phone in the phone book and I'd listen, see.  My 2600 was pretty good, I don't tend to like rollcall rap tracks, but hey - moar references.  King Tee is the sort of thing I usually like but it was merely okay, enjoyed the video.  Steady B yup, sounds good.
  • Facetime:

Wu-Tang - never heard this one, big fan.  Would probably be described as a throwaway track but doesn't belong anywhere near the bin.  Lil Wayne, used to love this album but haven't heard it for ages.  I didn't even experience him getting shit, as this is the only one I bought, I just heard he dropped off while jumping sharks, so gave up and I don't think I've heard anything else outside of guest spots.  Genuinely good album though, and this is a good one.  No-one sounds quite like him, he just does his thing and the beat kinda sounds like it's just keeping pace.  Thumbs up for the 'the let the beat build bitch' bits.  U-God - I quite like it, but I don't think he's got anything special as an MC.  Really didn't like Heltah Skeltah.  Maybe they should've tried sampling The Beatles.  Whateva Man was fun, not great but video was amusing.  Top drawer method acting, especially from the nun.  Da Rockweiler was the better track imo.  2Pac - I'm clueless.  Gaping hole in my hip hop education, I reckon I only know 5 tracks.  Didn't recognise this one, impressed with the production, again - pretty sure that stood out last time someone posted a 2Pac track.  Very easy to like.

Edit: @Liveinadive put Changes on a curated thing, which was ridiculously good.
  • Wu track is from the Wu vs Beatles mix. Which is immense generally.

    Just youtube or mixcloud it.

2Pac, get on Me Against The World. Amazing album. That's where Lord Knows is from.

Can't help you if you aren't down with heltah skeltah. (Granted, that is just an old tribe beat.) Absolute banger.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • I’ve probably says this before, but I just don’t get 2Pac - there’s nothing I heard from him at the time that I liked, he was a triumph of marketing over content.

So with due consideration to my less mature and less open minded self that heard it all in the 90s, I went back to listen to some tracks over the last few weeks.

Nope. Still shockingly bad (and now horribly dated) production and very average flow with wafer thin lyrical content - easy listening rap for people who don’t really like rap (I suppose in that context he was ground breaking in that he truly commercialised the genre, turning it toward pop music).

Opinions are my own etc etc. But I still don’t get it.

  • It's easy listening, but the (admittedly few) tracks I've heard benefit from the dated production.  It's got the biiig glossy sound of 2001 (the album), but from a few years before.  Not sure about the lyrics, can't say I've cared to listen much past pleasing choruses and a general flow that's easy on the ear.  I doubt I'll ever go deep, and I don't doubt the hyperbole is too much, but I'm more keen on his stuff than Jay Z's - a comparison I'm only making because a) he has a similarly legendary staus, and b) I haven't listened to much of his stuff either.
  • I don’t rate Jay-Z either! Anyone who trademarks their children’s name against future profiteering is a cunt.

  • I don't get the Tupac thing either. The stuff i've heard has been basically fine, but seeing as he's viewed by some as a kind of prophet i always expected much more.
  • He's pretty well amazingly charismatic, and hawt as hell according to multiple sources I trust.

Strictly 4 my niggaz has aged in a lot of ways, but there's some bangers and lyrics. Title track is incredible.

As mentioned, me against the world is AMAZING. maybe rose coloured a little as it was my shit when it dropped, but I still pump tracks in my mega mix.

All eyez is basically deathrow being at the top, with all the signs the crash was coming.

    Still some great stuff though.

But yeah, massively commercially successful and enjoyed by many a dumbcunt, as my man Tagedeasy Heezy would say.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Tupac had a very distinct vocal, and honestly that's often enough in rap music.

    Interesting pre-branding instance:

  • Yep.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Biggie was obviously the better music entity in every respect.
  • In other news I think Cardi's a bit charming.
  • I dunno, I'd carve a better single lp out of all eyez than I could life or death.

    Ready to die though.

Also, watching the (non) creative process of the tracks that didn't make all eyez and was then turned into the shitshow that is his post death discography is pretty depressing.
I'm still great and you still love it.

    Couldn't possibly be?

Will have to check that out.

  • I just think her voice is fun okay. It's a sad truth that all popping MCs are going to be accompanied by boring trap shit for at least 5 more years.
  • Also that's a cheetah. Pwned.
  • Nope. But I like the Leopard...
Jesus. That's some really bad rapping.
  • WINDOWS OPEN SUNSHINE PLAYLIST.

  • I'll get to that, but meanwhile, for a taste of wtf are the yoof listening too....

If you can stand it, watch the second half of the clip. I mean there's a lot to unpack here, the wrongness goes deep.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • I have neither the time nor inclination to click play on that. That picture tells me all I need to know - I’m unlikely to appreciate whatever the fuck it is.

Any way one hatchets it, juggalos are lot more fun than this.
  • Apparently he's also a statutory rapist?
  • Probably, I mean I just watched 3 minutes of his stuff from over the years, and it appears that he's basically aiming to be saints row the human.

Now, the issue is more the infrastructure behind him.
I'm still great and you still love it.

    First time I've heard this:

"so much purple you can call me Harpo"

"How can I have faith in something that I just can't see, this is my example son listen very closely you can't see oxygen but you believe you can breath"
  • Holy shit, that’s true if you discount that it is actually possible to see oxygen. There’s not much funnier in music than a stupid rapper who thinks he’s smart. See also Rass Kass.
