I enjoyed it well enough but it felt very thin and I've barely given it a second thought since leaving the cinema. The only thing that stuck with me is that the tone was all over the place which just became distracting as it touches on various genres and kind of floats along on its looks. It also took a particularly violent turn towards the end, unnecessarily so for the most part.
Having said all that, the two leads are great (Michael Shannon is a superb villain) and there's some very good supporting roles (Richard Jenkins in particular) but it's one where the buzz and Oscar love are lost on me.
My Entire High School Sinking Into The Sea is an animated movie by comic book writer/artist Dash Shaw. It's a weird one, though the title's pretty self explanatory. The hero's a high school sophamore named, not coincidentally, Dash, whose entire school - thanks to an earthquake and failure to follow planning codes - breaks off from the mainland and gradually sinks into the ocean. Carnage ensues, as Dash and his friends have to make their way up through the floors of the school (each year corresponds with a different floor) to escape certain death.
It's a film that I suspect I wanted to like more than I actually did. The animation's crude, but sometimes erupts into psychedelic splendour. The story's equally rudimentary, but with the same tendency towards sudden unexpected moments of insight. It's pretty funny, but your amusement will depend entirely upon your tolerance for irony and knowing digs at disaster movie tropes.
Still, I can't help being charmed by any teen disaster movie that so gleefully revels in destruction, and that isn't afraid to have its central character be a largely unrelenting arsehole. (Also, it has one hell of a cast.) The trailer's a pretty clear indicator of what you're letting yourself in for, both good and bad, so here it is...
Cardboard Gangsters on Netflix, after forcing myself to choose something fairly quickly. Was expecting an Irish Essex Boys of sorts, but it's a bit better than that. Doesn't do anything new but that doesn't have to be a problem. Good soundtrack in places too.
