Sounds like he's back on his Bergshit.
  • Who’s seen the Invisible Man and what’s the general opinion on which side of the line it falls on re tense, suspenseful, re-imagining or grotesque, miso, torture porn a thon?

I was wondering that too. Think I’ll wait out the cinema release and if the word is good, rent it at home later.
  • I already mentioned this in the Movie Record thread, but thought I’d expand on it a bit in here.

Went to see the UK premiere of How to Build a Girl last night, and it was good. I think it’s getting a full cinema release in June or July – which seems quick for a film that doesn’t even have a trailer yet.

It’s an adaptation of Caitlin Moran’s book, which itself is broadly autobiographical. I mean … this is a fictional story, but it’s based on herself, while liberally sprinkling in bits of similar stories like Julie Birchill’s. So it’s about a teenage girl on a Wolverhampton council estate who dreams of being a writer, any kind of writer. After failing at poetry, she applies for a job as a music critic despite knowing nothing about rock & roll. It’s literally the infamous “hip young gunslingers wanted” NME ad. Once she learns that the way to be a success in that world is to be a bitch and to tear bands to pieces with her words … she decides to become the bitch and proceeds to write all the posh London boys off the page. There’s a glorious moment at the end where Emma Thompson, as editor of The Face, describes her writing at the NME as like seeing “an Olympic swimmer splashing about in a paddling pool”.

It’s your basic hero’s journey, with a young girl having her natural joy and wonder beaten out of her by horrible men then realising she needs to get it back to be a real success. Your enjoyment of it will depend 100% on what you think of Caitlin Moran. I love her and so I loved the film. If you find her annoying, this won’t be for you.

Beanie Fieldstein, from Lady Bird and Booksmart, plays the barely-disguised part of Moran and is absolutely brilliant at it. She starts off almost like a Disney princess, full of wonder at the world, but quickly morphs into a decent approximation of Moran as she was at the height of her teenage fame – all fishnets and frock coats, vodka and put-downs. There’s a massive supporting cast, with a particular shout-out to Paddy Considine as her Dad, but this is definitely a star vehicle for Beanie. She fucking glows as the lead.

How to Build a Girl is funny without being silly, adorable without being sugary, and positive without being preachy. It’ll be a perfect family movie over Christmas in a couple of years’ time.

Not the sort of movie I would usually go see at the pictures, but it was well worth it for a Q&A with Moran and the director afterwards. By the way, the director is Coky Giedroyc – big sister of Mel Giedroyc. Turns out she’s pretty good at this.

Spenser Confidential Another miss for Netflix. It's not shit it's just nothing. If you have seen anything with Mark Wahlberg in you have seen this movie. Wahlberg is a tough Boston cop whose uncompromising commitment to what is right lands him in trouble, can he get revenge? Of course he can, by punching people and arguing with his girlfriend. Hey, he's just a simple guy from Boston. An utter waste of an evening.
I watched this last night. I thought it was ok, but it's very 'by the numbers' too.
I do find that Boston accent very irritating, especially on the lady though.

I liked it. It's not a "torture porn-a-thon" and it's more on the suspenseful side of things. Although it is a story about abusive relationships and it doesn't shy away from those themes. It ain't a perfect film but I'd recommend going to see it in a cinema, it's very nicely made.
  • Going to try to go this weekend. Love Elizabeth Moss and the concept is great so yep yep yep, let's do this.

Obv relying on the global box office, it has been announced that Fast and Furious 9 has been delayed a whole YEAR - to April 21.
  • Quiet Place 2 delayed also I believe.

I watched Beasts of No Nation earlier and Idris Elba is acting up to 11 in that.
  • That is a brilliant film.
    Horrifying though.

Guy I sit next to got an email from them saying hey we're ok to come to you know. Yeah.

Saw a piece on the news about one of the oldest restaurants in Chinatown, owner never missed a rent payment in 40yrs or something, just missed his first because people aren't out, it's terrible.
  • Cinemas are closed over here. But I wouldn't go anyway at the moment.
  • Chinese cinemas got boned hard. Spring festival is a MASSIVE time for the industry here, with every screen and showing packed out. This year? Closed and empty.
  • The precariousness of everything is really terrifying.

The more efficient you are the less resilient you are.

Isn't a universal thing but certainly applies to supply chains, specialisation etc. Our mass consumption is built upon it.

  • I’ve been irresponsible and been to my local cinema to see The Invisible Man. It’s brilliant. Non miso. Very prescient, great starring role. The weird plot holes here or there don’t matter because it’s a great but really uncomfortable watch.
