  • Not that there's any hurry. It's a reskinned PS2 game.

  • I completed this recently after I finished Nier. I am a huge fan of Ueda's other works, and although I see glimpses of what he's trying to achieve here, I just can't see past the fucking awful bugs, the shitty camera, the basic gameplay built on the idea that, yes, you know what to do, yes, you know what the game wants you to do to achieve it, you know how to guide trico, but for some reason he just stares for 15 minutes and refuses to move. Or runs back because your pointing wasn't the right way because of course it wasn't. Or you press the button that's stroke trico/use mirror item/remove spear/pickup item, but it doesn't pick the right one because how the fuck could it. Also those amor suit guys crying you into the door? fuck that whole thing. Not fun at all.

Can anyone guess what my answer was to get trico to finally move or do what I needed? What worked every time without fail? Restart from checkpoint. That tells me maybe it's not some smart AI, but maybe the scripting broke.

(edit: Speaking of, how many jumped onto a ledge that crumbled above trico, and obviously the game plays a small cutscene that means you catch trico's tail, but the kid just falls to his death completely spoiling the moment? doing that three times a go was frustrating, because there's no way to do anything else!)

I loved the design, I didn't mind the controls at all, and I loved just sitting with trico and calming him down after a battle. I also loved that ending, and the story in general was quite nice. I was so ready to love this game.

It was just completely broken for me, unfortunately, and needed way more time in development. somehow.
  • Interesting that people had such different experiences with this game. I didn't have to restart a checkpoint once. Granted Trico did boot me off a ledge once and on one occasion failed to catch me. Think I just laughed. Perhaps I wouldn't have done if I'd had lots of other problems/glitches with the game.
  • The bugs in this game and many quirks pissed me off to no end. But, I'd rather have played it than not.

As the game has surely dropped in price by about 60% or more now, its a no-brainer, low-risk purchase. No great loss if you dislike it, and a stellar bargain if you are cinty-minded.

This sums up my thoughts.  There were plenty of moments where I noticed the game hadn't kept pace with most other modern 3D adventure games, but on the other hand there aren't many moments in other games that hit the highs of TLG.  I wouldn't laud it as a bona fide classic, but it was a damn fine experience.  It's incredible that a 7hr escort mission - where your charge is fifteen times your size - works at all.

That's a very fair shout. Maybe I should have added exactly this. I'm glad I played it, but like watching a film from a favourite director or a book from a favourite author, i came away more disappointed because I know what this team has been capable of.

There were moments where I got even more frustrated because they were so beautiful, and I knew I would have to move soon and potentially have the atmosphere spoilt. One main example was when I jumped into a pool, and under water I saw trico jump in after me, and seeing him at this scale dive under with the boy was just incredible. I absolutely adored just splashing around with this giant clumsy thing, and trico shaking off and having a lie down. THEN I hit this point where he needed to jump in the water after and just stared at a rock. And I refused to restart. 25 mins later I gave in running back and forth and pointing, stroking his feather etc, and restarted again. Was fine after that.

Maybe I just got a really shitty disc?

  • Nope. My copy was like that. It's common. It can be a fucking terrible time trying to get the cunt to do anything at all at points.
  • The game deemed you unworthy. Only the chosen may have an unbroken play through.
  • Fucking Ueda. That's why he left when he did. He printed 2 copies of the game, one pre bug-fix, one post. He sent them all out as one product, and watched to see people defend the game as a masterpiece and others blast it as an unplayable mess. He's reading this thread right now. This is the real game.

    Well played Ueda...

I did a quick Google to see if the phrase 'your charge' is correct when escorting something, and managed to leave a Google Chrome tab open with the search results for 'escort charge'.  My wife has watched iplayer in a tab to the left of it since then.  I wonder if I'll be getting a chat about it in the next few days.

    Mine was relatively bug free.

Sure, it wouldn't always do what I wanted straight away... but that was part of the charm - my three year old doesn't always do what I tell him!

I played it ages after everyone so it might have been tempered expectations but apart from one or two notable bits, it was fairly smooth for me. I think I was going in knowing how would play that helped a lot.

I had no problems, and where it was a bit clunky or where Trico misbehaved I felt that it just fed in to the whole experience.

I really can't stress enough how much I loved this game. It's top 10 stuff for me.

Going to do another run-through when I get my Pro.

Staying one step ahead of women is like playing a tactical turn-based grid battle game, @Paul.

  • Damn, I got the buggy one as well.
Amazing bits to the game but I was so sick of it by the end I was very glad it was over.
