Sucks indeed that feeling, but like others said, keep up the good work and it will lead somewhere at some point. It's hard when you've put a lot of time in making something that you feel represents a bit of you and your thoughts, and other people are all like "meh".
  • I'm in one of these phases at the moment. But then again I feel like I've been in it more or less for over 20 years, so I dunno.
  • Thanks guys, especially Stoph, Liv, G. As I said it wasn't intended to be a pity party, I was just incredibly frustrated last night after what seemed like a constant week of fighting my corner against someone far less qualified and competent. Then having to clear out the sink because no one else in the house ever extends the courtesy.

Stoph, I am not sure I am wise beyond my years as i'm knocking on 30, haha. I often feel it's what keeps me back, a lot of places seem to be very welcoming of young firebrands but seem to look on someone older as not having the nous to have got themselves together earlier, like life is some incredibly prosaic boardgame with hundreds of gilded ladders but no snakes.

I think 'scape is largely spot on, I am definitely chasing a career that's dwindling, and I live in he wrong part of the country for it, and have never been able to needle my way in with the "scottish gaming elite", mainly because I am not gonna be a sycophant for people I don't really find all that entertaining - it'd probably be different if I was Scottish but 500 tweets a day that start with "Here," and end with "Yakuza 0 is smashing." is not my idea of interesting.

Luckily I have a job on the side anyway, which has nothing to do with what I want, but it's easy, affords me time to work on other stuff, and pays well enough.

I'll keep on searching for that golden opportunity, and apologise in advance for making the same post in 12 months if I get a master's.
  • Tempy, we should build our own video game website and then you can write for it and use it for your portfolio and then when you get a job off the back of it we can let it die and you can take me with you.
  • Getting a very BSG vibe there

  • Our website will have less rape, and consistent characterisation, and will end with something other than a wizard.
  • Can we keep the bit where we say one of the characters says his dead wife smelled of cabbage?
  • You can join my site and we'll split the profits 50-50.

Sure. (I don't actually remember that part)

Is ur site just the games or does it also feature wrastling?
  • It's early season 4
    Spoiler:
  • It has games and wrestling but NEVER wrestling games.
  • That is the only correct way of doing it.
  • Wrestling is a separate thing, although I guess it could come under tv if you liked. I like Live's suggestion though.

For real though, I think I need at least one other person to give me motivation.
  • I'd happily work with you, and if you wanted to host the stuff I do with my pals - who also love wrassling - that'd be a treat.
  • I'd be happy to contribute some stuff. Busy period has receded somewhat, after a busy 12-18 months, so I finally have time to put back into writing and shiz.
  • Sometimes if you want something to exist you have to make it yourself.

    Trite but true.

Tempy, you have the privilege of being able to write as a hobby. If you ever see an opportunity to punt that into a paying career, grab it with both hands and give it 100%. And remember that sometimes younger folk get the opportunities because they’re cheaper, not because they’re better or luckier. An employer often assumes they can’t afford a grown-up.
  • I was thinking about suggesting some sort of badger-made gaming etc. website just last week funnily enough. Decided against starting a thread in the end because these things have always fallen through in the past.

How difficult would it be to actually make a bit of money out of that sort of thing? I really want to do some more writing and editing, but it's got to pay, if only a little.

I'm serious about it if it's viable and other people are committed though.
  • Paying? Unlikely.

If anyone is interested in getting together with me though, give me a shout.

Tempy, is your pals stuff just video, or do you do written content as well?
  • they just do video, I write and do vids

That's where it's gone, sadly. Almost everyone who got into games-writing in better times has withdrawn to their own cliques since, relying largely on their old fans for sustenance. Or they've moved on entirely.

Meanwhile, YouTubers are making hay by appealing to the current batch of young gamers via relatably hipster collectives. The emerging elephant is that most modern games don't warrant intelligent scrutiny. But they're still played in huge numbers...

Red Letter's same-age connection with us old-timers is working for them, but matching their production standards wouldn't be cheap.
  • I'm not even a huge fan of them to be honest, I don't really find I chime with their opinions often, and I don't really connect with them as voices.

It's okay, I only watch their VHS stuff. My point is that they're well-rounded in terms of scope. I wouldn't be surprised if they pulled out some old toys to review, say.

But you need money to match their not-really-a-set-but-actually-a-set professionalism. And you need an Evans figure with a positive outlook in general, but who doesn't dive overboard with hyperbole every other outing. People don't wanna watch negativity parades (hence why I'd do terribly), and the majority of modern games are awful. Sell your soul or branch out, I reckon.
  • Evans is roundly my least favourite.

Edit: in only not engaging more as i am out and drunk on my phone

Ah, but like I say: I only watch their Cannon-era material. Anything I watch is for entertainment, not opinions. If you offer both, the former's more important unless you're writing for a right old dry cabal of PC men.
