I started on Easy, having never played XCom before. After 5 hours it had got too easy, but at least I'd learned the basics by then. I started again on Normal.
Only after finishing the whole thing did I try Ironman on (I think) Hard mode. What an experience that was. Never been more pleased to finish a game.
78%, but three times in a row, and then they got shot dead. I did a flank, took aim with three guys close to an enemy, all missed, they took one shot and killed one of mine with a critical. Like holy shit.
Oh three guys in panic now, fail number three. I appreciate the tips but I think this just highlights why I avoid strategy, I haven't the patience for it.
Grenades are very important. Get everyone into position on a group of enemies, have a couple on overwatch and then chuck a grenade into the group. The overwatch guys should take out survivors as they scatter, but you've still got one more guy left if any mopping up needs doing.
Percentages are percentages, and there's not much you can do if you get a string of bad luck. But the more you play the less you find yourself relying on that one 80% shot. And once you get promotions those percentages rise rapidly anyway. It's only the base grunts that are that useless.
I used the grenade tactic, blew up a car an enemy was behind, then flanked the last two with three guys, let one take a beating, other two on overwatch, done dealio
just failed a mission because my guy decided that, rather than run around a gate, which was literally two steps extra, he'd kick open a fucking gate and alert every single enemy
I wasn't on Ironman thankfully, but the path seemed to show ignoring the gate and Marky just went ham and booted fuck out of it. I'm all for chance in games when its a loot drop, but working into a position, one tile away from an enemy and the game decides your guy is essentially gonna shoot the sky before getting one shot ain't my bag. I know that's a thing within these games so I can't hate the game for it.
I'm sure its a phenomenal game if you like the genre, no doubt.
