I'm on the dark n stormy I promised myself last night. Only it's a bit shit because I could only get ginger ale not beer, and in my frustration I forgot to pick up a lime.

    Anyway, to your health!

Just returned home from my holiday but decided to keep the spirit alive by making a blackened cod taco and drinking a bottle of plonk.

    Cheers all.

btw @poprock's suggestion of Spaniard + Muriel's is solid. Two of the best taverns in the town.

Dirty Onion, Duke of York, National and are all within a stone's throw of those two. And The Merchant for a cocktail is a treat worth going for. Has to be in its old cocktail lounge though.

    White's Tavern for olde worlde

Kelly's Cellars for olde world meets 21C is worth a look. Mourne Fish restaurant is next door.... and then Madden's around the corner for trad music and 70s-80s Belfast vibe - I think they still "buzz you in" for that Troubles Belfast security arrangements flavour.

Romania in a weeks time. Bucharest for five days then the Electric Castle festival in Cluj for the last five. Absolutely fucking buzzing, first holiday anywhere in 8 years.

    I've even bought shorts.

Bucharest is quite (a) funky place... The start (stray) dogs break my heart.

Edit - I'll never make a post on an Amazon tablet again...

The area where your festival takes place though, will be incredible in the summer. And also quite scary, depending on exactly where it is.

The Gypsy estate (for want of a better word) was one of the most thought provoking things I've seen. It was like some time machine shit. Almost scary to imagine getting lost in that area.

Well, my hangover can attest to a great night in Belfast. Cheers to Poppo & Davy for their recommendations. Managed quite the crawl in the end hitting Dirty Onion, Kelly’s Cellars, The Spaniard and The Merchant. Also stopped by Bert’s Jazz Bar but that was a bust on pretty much every front. Cocktails in the Merchant were superb though and quite the surroundings.

Had an excessive Belfast bap in the market to aid recovery and on to the Ards for a few days now for a change of pace.
  • Last day in Hove and after a day on the sun I'm back in the Hove Place pub with a pint of Peroni. Yoss, the dog is called Dave, apparently.
  • I think I must be weird because the idea of going on holiday just fills me with anxiety.
Especially with kids, it just seems like parenting but in a more inconvenient location minus all of your stuff that makes the day easier.
And then it’s the packing, the getting through the airport, the travelling with everyone, the costs... I’m feeling my heart rate raise just thinking of it.

I hope one day I can get past that and enjoy a holiday the way that you all do.

You all sound like you’re having such a lovely time

Too late. I've accidentally discovered the pub we went to next. I had no idea until I walked in and it occurred to me that this looked familiar and sure enough they have Hells on draught. It's The Blind Busker fyi.

That was also good, but Hove Place was the winner. At least once we’d ordered food so the waitress could stop hassling us.
  • She didn't stop hassling us, she just switched to hassling us to drink beer, which frankly wasn't a hassle.

True. At that point it was just helpful and attentive service.
  • “If these two try to stand up and walk to the bar they’re not going to make it. I’d better give them table service. Safer for everyone.”
  • There were stairs between us and the bar so she was probably right.

Holidaying with kids isn’t something I’ve experienced but I pretty much agree with the rest of the stresses. I tend to create quite detailed itineraries though and hate being late so leave plenty of time for traveling anyway so as not to create additional stress.

The benefit of seeing new places outweighs all the other hassle for me but worth trying to embrace some of the anxieties and make them work for you if possible. Plus plenty of amazing places practically on your doorstep here so easy to remove things like flights from the equation if easier. Hope you find something that works for you mate :)

There's some to quality stuff in that line up, alongside a lot of what I assume are Romanian acts (Gregescu anyone). There's also Limp Bizkit.

Treat yourself and go and see The Viagra Boys if you can - they're amazing live.

    Have a great holiday!

I think one of the biggest stresses for me over the years is the fact that I never had any sort of holiday pay, if I was off work I was losing money. It’s hard to reconcile the other anxieties and difficulties of travelling with the fact that I’m not only paying for the hassle but I’m also losing money at the same time.

A weeks break over Christmas to see in laws would cost me flights plus taxi plus food and drink for the week plus spending money plus presents plus a weeks lost wages.

I’m hoping that the fact that I get paid annual leave for the first time in this job means I can at least remove that worry

Holidays should be a break. I've never had kids but I've always gone about the principle that a holiday should be as little like your day to day as possible. That was always my parents' pov. They were wizards who always did a day for us and a day for them in fairness so fair play to them. When I was struggling as a student, the only holiday I ever did during uni was to go to Iceland and have planned itineraries every day, something I'd never do now.

Oh I’d agree with this but I just wish I could enjoy myself and let go of this anxiety I have. I hate it

My parents did the following every other year - rent a gite in France, and then exist. It was amazing. I never quite understood it at the time but there was so much for idiot children to do and they could drink wine and eat cheese.

    I'll steal that idea.
  • What’s a gite?
