Ah yes, it's almost the time of year when the onslaught of 'good' games commences, in fact it's already begun. With that said, I thought it would be nice to get a community consensus on The Top 5 Bear and Badger Games Of All Time! It'll be a bit of fun, which might spark a debate or two and we'll have a list. Lists are nice, and people enjoy lists. Or so I've heard. 

So then, I'll keep track of the mentions. You [obviously] get 5 votes, which will be ranked in order of popularity in accordance to other voters. I'll aggregate the votes when there's sufficient data. There are no restrictions on genre, age or platform so fire from all cylinders girls. Anyway, enough with the wibble waffle. I'll go first, because I'm awesome. 


'Haaks Top 5

Reasoning* My list is primarily based on three factors. 1) Community, 2) time spent in-game and 3) nostalgia/gameplay impact.

5) Street Fighter IV
- Where to start with Street Fighter IV. First of all, the Mordor Mashup community. For those who were participating in the community at it's peak when the game launched there is no explanation needed on it's level of importance. The last generation or two has really brought communities together online, but this was one of the first times that one had spilled out of the internet and into the real World for me. I'll be forever grateful for Nick's hospitality on putting up this travelling combatant and for the insane banter and competition the community as a whole provided in his house. In my opinion SF IV is the pinnacle of the genre and solely responsible for the resurgence in TFG community in general.

4) Destiny
- To be fair, if Bungie made a Parrot simulator I'd probably play that. Whatever the controversy surrounding the company in the past few years with Joe Staten and Marty O'Donnell leaving I've always been a huge, massive Bungie fan. I knew from the moment I played the Beta I was going to love Destiny. It just ticks a lot of my boxes. Loot, guns, Sci-Fi and PvE excursions. Again though, the games been made infinity more enjoyable thanks the all the Badgers that play. I firmly believe that if Bungie continue to listen to fans and improve Destiny at it's current rate that it will undoubtedly be my all time favourite game. It certainly has the potential, I think we all know that.

3) Dark Souls
- I'll never forget that night in Nick's (Fullspectrum) house after the first Mordor Mashup event. We were tired, huddled around the TV when all of a sudden Curtis proclaims his prowess at Demon Souls. I had heard of the game and was interested to see it in action so was keen to see what Curtis would show us. Well, within about 2 minutes Curtis had managed to hurl himself off a cliff (he might have been drunk, I can't remember ) which had me sold. The following year Dark Souls was out, and I spent about 3 months buried in it from head to toe. One of the games most appealing features for me at the time, and still is, is the way in which the story is delivered through the environment and game mechanics as opposed to endless text outings and cinematics. You are encouraged to explore the lore of Dark Souls at your own leisure / peril. I recently went back to it on PC for a 60fps, hi-def play through and it's still one of the best RPGs ever made. An absolute blinder in level design and gameplay mechanics. 

2) Halo
- Back when Halo: Combat Evolved came out, I was still living at home, deciding on whether college was the way for me or not. I was 19. My brother was 15. I'd sees all the footage of The Pillar of Autumn from E3 but nothing prepared us for 'Halo' - CE's second level. That was my first experience of sandbox co-op gameplay and to this day, myself and my brother must have played through Halo: CE dozens of times. I distinctly remember nights where we'd be just like "Halo?" and start out on a new co-op Legendary campaign and still experience a different way to play. Halo: CE truly is an exceptional game and while I have World of Warcraft ranked above it, Halo:CE is simply one of those games that breeds nostalgic influence. A simple note from Marty O'Donnells score can take me back in time 14 years in a heart beat.

1) World of Warcraft
- I can hear the groans and sighs already, but hear me out. World of Warcraft, for me, is the definition of bottled lightening. It came out at a time in my life when there was every potential possibility for me to get endlessly, hopelessly lost within it's world, and oh by fuck did I. It also came out when online gaming was really starting to take off, when people had moderately decent broadband (for the time) connections and most importantly, when the mindset of the generation hadn't yet be swayed with casual offerings. My first character in WoW, a Nightelf Rogue took 24 days of real time play to reach the initial level cap. I did that in just over a month. That should put into perspective the ratio of playtime to sleep and actually going outside.

In hindsight it could be seen as a complete waste of time, but honestly, for what it was and for the length of time I did it, I wouldn't change a thing. By the time I moved to Horde, and my second character he had 74 days played if I recall correctly. My second character, Bioboost - an Orc Shaman has over 170 days, however, I haven't played WoW competitively since Wrath of the Lich King in 2010/2011

In some respects, it's futile trying to explain why WoW is so magical to someone who hasn't played it. But the first time I crossed the Ocean from Darnassus to the mainland and made my way through The Wetlands, onto Loch Modan and ultimately the city of Iron Forge will be a memory I never forget. A once in a life time experience, that as hard as they may try (Blizzard included) can never again, be replicated. True magic.
