Got lost for 5 hours and didn't do a fucking thing to make sure it doesn't happen again?

You think because of the money involved, specialist equipment operated by trained, skilled operators, extreme risk etc that you'd have this shit planned out to a ridiculous degree

The beacon should be able to operate no matter what. Self contained power and be super rugged.

It's easy to get judgemental but cut corners may well feature in this.

Sad. But I'd have walked away when they hand you a piece of paper saying "I understand this craft is experimental, and not rated by any professional body, and may result in my death" and ask you to sign it. (No, really.)

It's an experimental one-off vehicle. There is nothing wrong with making that and buzzing about in it. And even having like minded high risk appetite people with you.  It's kind of how advances are made. It's a risky endeavour. If wreckage is retrieved, "we" will learn something from it.

What is wrong is taking payment off people and bringing them along - people who are not experienced or qualified enough to realise the risk.

  • I totally agree with that.

However at the same time if you are doing something as unique and obviously risky as this there is some onus on you to do some third party research as well. Just reading the Cameron interview on the BBC and seeing various quotes from industry insiders since the confirmation of the implosion and the picture I'm getting is that OceanGate were notorious within what would be quite a small industry circle.

A billionaire has the funds and connections to seek a second opinion and from what I can gather that opinion would have been "not a fucking chance".

At the least they should have found the 2018 whistle blower, combined that with boasts about how they dont play by the rules and noped out.
  • It was a commercial venture. He boasted about using materials that you shouldn't use, and declined to have it rated by the appropriate safety body. They fired the guy in charge when he refused to allow crewed testing before they had completed appropriate safety tests.

Look where getting around needlessly prioritising passenger safety over commercial innovation got him. Turns out he can't do this just as safely by breaking the rules.

Sweet fucking Christ. Surely that's objective number one for any vehicle with people in it.

This. I grew up with Star Trek, I'm a firm believer in exploration and curiosity for the sake of it. But turning it into a business and putting other people's lives at risk to line your pockets is evil.

I think you've nailed it.  The weird thing is that there are a few vehicles that can get to the Titanic relatively easily.  This thing, for example.  Surely if you're a literal billionaire, you don't pick the experimental,  budget friendly option.

There's a documentary that shows Ocean Gate accidentally installing one of the propellers back to front, so when the guy presses forwards on the controller, it can only spin. They worked out a temporary solution (I think they held the controller sideways!) and went ahead with the dive.  Red flags all over.
  • Yeah I google image searched Deep Sea Challenger and that Limiting Factor came up as well.

Just look at those two then look at the OceanGate thing.
It gets even worse when you compare the cockpits.

It's what happens when you get someone who is smart enough to build something and arrogant enough to not get an opinion on it.

You need people like that to push at the boundaries but you don't pay for a ticket to sit beside them.

I mean - that guy who brought his son with him. Billionaire or not , it's heartbreaking.  He clearly had not realised what he was getting himself and his son into.  Likely allowed himself to be talked into it.

From the looks of it, the dad knew what he was doing, but the son only went along because it was a father's day thing.
