Death Stranding - Kojima/Reedus

It was announced, with a trailer, before the Brexit vote and just over a month after Trump was chosen as the Republican nominee for president. I find it hard to believe that this is a reaction to either of those events.

I'm taking the piss of course. It does say it in the video subtitle in that article though, BBC clickbait.

Fair enough. Unsurprisingly, I didn’t watch the vid.

At 11pm in Switzerland this made me smile.
That was awkward and unsettling, never post anything like it again.

  • The telling thing about this 'game' is the lack of variety of the thumbnails on Twitch. There are approximately 6 different pictures across a screen's worth of players.
  • So we're still making snarky 'game' jokes then?

If it's not a game it would have made more sense as an Xbox One exclusive.

  • I've looked at spoilers for this game.

Which is great but probably won’t stop people who haven’t offering their opinions ;)

  • What good are opinions without everyone having the same one?

In any case from what Ive read this game could well be very controversial in terms of content.

Dunno... It looks quite absorbing, actually.

Might be another Edge GTA 3 moment...

Also, the movement system looks superb... Load of different animations for the differing types of terrain.
You're gait is wildly altered by the loadouts too...

Could literally be the ultimate speed running game.

50 -50 on the music though.

I might remove a single ' if I see any evidence of a game today.

Admittedly, the early David Cage style 'pick up a crate with your right hand using the right trigger, use left trigger to pick up with your left hand. Use right and left bumper to keep your balance' doesn't seem to be used again in the rest of the game. So maybe the designer was taking the piss.

But then blew it by making something even more tedious than a Cage game - a crate delivering simulator that noone realised they needed.

The 'game does get "blown wide open" by providing a bike later so the crate delivering is a little quicker. Then there is a bossy type battle and then it's back to the crates.

Maybe there is a story somehwere but padding out cut-scenes with 2 hours of delivering crates in between is the not the way to go. It's like a mmog (whatever they are called) but with no content whatsoever. It's like an early alpha where the bare minimum is up and running. It's like ... awful.

Overall, it's not a non-game like Cage's so 'game it is.

What kind of controversy? Because I'm not a fan of the usual creepy Koj flavour.
  • Game's anti Trump/Brexit stance.

I know, I did consider that.

The mention of the bike was to give hope to those about to face palm against their controller at the sheer drudgery of the opening 2-3 hours.
  • I watched about an hour or so of gameplay on this yesterday.
Got to admit I did start to wonder if it was some kind of Kojima meta joke.

I mean the main criticisms often levelled at open world games are that missions often become fetch quests and that the worlds are under populated with little to interact with. This seems to deliberately aim for those.

It seems odd to me that the most interesting thing that can happen out on the field is something the player will more often than not try to avoid.

What I will say on a positive is that I really like the Dark Souls+ MP aiding each other side of things, which also plays nicely into the narrative of rebuilding.
In a better game that could be quite something.
  • MP? Where?
The world is completely barren from everything I've seen so far. I think I spotted a small bird earlier but wasn't sure.

EDIT: I initially thought the crates were to highlight the stupid inventory systems we have in a lot of games - the ability to carry everything at once. I thought that was quite funny. Then I realised it wasn't that at all.

Also, this game is a scientific study on the future of humanity. They voted for Trump, they voted for Brexit, will they pay for my 'game?
    We're doomed. :-)

Well considering it doesn't actually launch until today presumably there wont be many people able to leave things behind just yet.. lol.
