Ad-Hoc Gaming / Definitely Not Ram's Wibbly Driving Game
  • Think your joypad will be 'Dinput' whereas xbox360 uses 'Xinput'...and many games just support the latter.  I'll look to see if I can do something with my game to support both - to be honest I thought it already did so I'll need to check that and see what's up.

Don't expect you to go to any efforts just for my game, but you could try something like this if you want to try to get your joypad working generally.: https://github.com/x360ce/x360ce
I've used it before in the past when i had an old joypad.  Basically you download it, and copy the files into the same folder as the .exe of whatever game you want to play.  Then when you play the game it pretends your joypad inputs are Xinput.  Before you run the game, you can run their exe to open a config tool, where you can map the inputs of your joypad to the xbox layout.

Also a general reminder, any of you interested in playing in the beta test session...today is Thursday and Thursday is the day we're playing! We'll be starting at 9pm, and there's a discord link in the game menu if you like that sort of thing.  Will prob play until at least 11, so if you're a bit late but still want to join that's fine.  Might stick around later, just depends on if there are other players around or not!

    Should be there.

I'll give that converter a try too. But will play with keyboard if that doesn't work.

Forgot about this! But joined in for the last 30mins or so.  Good fun even though I'm still struggling with keyboard control.

I got into a loop two or three times when the game tried to put me back on the track. It would either put me back in water or right on the edge and I would slide in again. Was unbreakable so had to quit.

The fact that you are placed back on the track in the same alignment you were when you went off doesn't help. Maybe you should be put back on the track with your wheels on the ground?

The vehicles are maybe a bit too easy to tip (but maybe that's a combo of me and controls). The van is comical. The convertible seems the most stable?

  • cheers for playing davy.  The reset is still work in progress. it's meant to only reset back to a point when you had all four wheels on the road, but seems to get it a bit wrong at times - i can never replicate it but seen plenty of others do it...i'll be trying to adjust it to restore back to the centre of the road.

the van is easy to tip, but keyboard exasperates it because it's harder to gently adjust steering...you turn one way then another and it's full lock each time - that gets the weight transferring and away you go!  there is a bit of weighting on the keyboard controls so it's not instant lock, but it's not enough to give the subtle control, but any less and the cars become much less responsive.  the van's strength is it's actually the best off road, it's 4 wheel drive and has best grip and most ground clearance - so it's the best for taking shortcuts, but only if you can keep it balanced.

cruiser is a nice smooth drive, prob best suited to keyboard as it rewards getting that quick back end flick, touch of handbrake and slide it round the corners to maintain speed....but you need to keep the speed up otherwise it handles like a barge! :)

  • Cheers also to Birdorf, Trippy and Shabs for joining in, much appreciated.
Shabs, how was the net performance for you?  Seemed ok from this side, though i did notice a couple of your FNF specials, generally though you seemed to be roughly where expected! :)

  • No worries Ram. Yeah seemed fine for the most part. Generally only didn't like it when I stayed in contact with another car, then it would wig out a bit. Game didn't slow down much either even with a full race going.

When does the leaderboard update during races? A lot of the time it didn't seem to be accurate on my screen.

I think one of my fave things is watching people race at night from a distance. There's something about the headlights moving through the town and so on that just looks great.

Yep. Even with my old PC it kept running fine with other cars on the screen.

  • Glad it seemed smooth, that's a positive. had one player from Canada on too at one point, so all around the world was represented!

In race leaderboard is dodgy. We're working through updating the UI and the way stats are handled, and that leaderboard is currently stuck between the two. The main time it goes wrong is during the 2nd lap. Each player tracks the relative checkpoint positions locally, rather than constantly polling each other over the net...but the local player is not currently tracking what lap other players are on right. so by lap two it will do things like think the person at checkpoint 4 on lap 1, is ahead of the player on lap 2 but now only at checkpoint 3.

Davy, did that converter not work or did you just go with keys anyway last night?

  • Hey all, apologies for pushing some of you off cliffs.

First time I've tried the convertible and I liked it, the more drifty style seemed to suit the tracks better. They're really nicely designed though I wonder about the shortcuts, there are some good ones but if you try to go off road you often get stuck. I wonder if the shortcuts could be a wee bit better 'signposted'

Like the improved and persistent damage and the slipstream (does this actually boost you?) Mine wigged out a wee bit with prolonged rubbing (fnarr) and collisions, too, usually in an amusing manner. I agree with the default car being a bit tippy, though it felt tweaked and less inclined to end up on it's side.

The other day I got repeatedly replaced in a river but respawning at a different location worked. Seemed improved yesterday.

    Most importantly, it's fun.

Aye, it's good fun playing with others.

I only tipped over a couple of times, but I'd be worried that it might put new players off and have them rushing to give a negative review. The convertible is great as is the sports job, once you get used to it and I always felt like I could catch up if I didn't make any mistakes.

Night time looks awesome, but I hate racing in the dark and would prefer to see less of it.

Plans for any more tracks, a series of races with point allocation/a league type thing, leaderboards, a map?

Couldn't get it to work but I'm not sure I was using it properly. Have found a tutorial and I think I might have missed out on a step or two in the config. Will try again.

Night time racing looks great and is fun but I'd rather I knew the tracks better before having it imposed.

The slipstreaming is nice too but given my skills/control issues it felt like the horse had got the bit between its teeth. :)

What about having temp damage that slows you down while its active? Might be a good feature to have that.

Overall it is pleasing - there is a comical feel to it which makes it fun.

Sorry for missing out Ram. I'll have a session on it soon though.

Do you have a laptime leaderboard?

  • Hello, and thanks. here's a group response to those points.

shortcuts - tricky. i want people to discover them rather than be shown them. getting stuck is also part of the risk.  not saying there won't be spots where it's too extreme and it needs tweaked...but it's meant to be that shortcuts are mostly for the van and car to offset the speed diff with sportscar and cruiser...sports car in particular will snag on smaller bumps that the others can drive over.

slipstreaming does give a speed boost. the faster the tow, the more it reduces drag on your car - so you go faster but it also makes handling harder!

temp damage - there's a little bit in there already. i didn't want permanent damage to affect performance, but after a 'big smash' the engine is nerfed for a few seconds (slightly diff time for diff cars) where you basically have no power, but you can still 'free wheel' and steer.  will be playing with the variables on that and plan to add smoke effects etc. to make it more obvious.

night time - yeah, it's a big part of the game, but it's always been a concern that it can make it too hard especially for new comers.  when developing i often disable the day cycle so it stays daytime - what if i set the 'practice' (offline) mode to be like that?  so if people want to practice it's always daytime, but when you go online you get the day/night cycle?  i could disable the cycle for people online too, but then you'll have a big advantage over people racing at night...

yep, this is a concern...but at the same time, not wanting to sound stubborn, but it's how I want the game to play...having it so the cars don't tip just doesn't appeal to me.  maybe i'll come up with a better balance, or an alternate 'starter car'.

map, steam leaderboards, more races/tracks/game modes all planned.  will also look into 'ghost' replays for best times on each circuit.

    Not at all.

No night time offline sounds like a good idea if you're going to implement TT leaderboards.
  • Would it be hard to have an option for time off day in offline? So you can choose yourself
  • Yeah, will do it as an option.

Whoops. So the code for this was in place and had been working, but some other code changes had actually stopped it from working! :)

  • Hello badgers.
Looking to arrange another multiplayer test session of my game for this Saturday, starting from 9pm.  Also doing a little session between 1pm and 2pm that day, for the benefit of some people in completely different time zones.
If anyone is interested and available for either (or both if you're hyper keen) then it would be great if you could join in.  We'll be playing the latest beta version through Steam, and if you don't already have access to the game but want to play, let me know and I'll get you a key for it.
    Cheers!

    I can probably do both.

Left your Discord server as someone kept pinging me and I wanted to punch him.
  • Champion.  If you want to favour one over the other go for 9pm please.  Obviously more than welcome to join the afternoon one, but that's more as a favour to a couple of players that have turned up before but are in totally different time zones - chances are I'll be getting distracted by the kids during that one, and won't be able to stick around past 2pm either.

Yeah, I'd have left too if I could! :)

  • Bumping this as a reminder about tomorrow just in case anyone else is interested.

A chance to play my driving game Foreveracers (for free obviously) and join in some multiplayer shenanigans!  Afternoon session 1-2pm, then evening games from 9pm.

If you're on steam then you've pretty much got everything needed (though a joypad is recommended)...just let me know if you need a copy of the game!
