The Moving House Thread
  • Well I don’t hate holidays. There are some I enjoy. I just don’t like holidays I can’t afford, going somewhere I don’t want to go and at a time when it’s really inconvenient

I think it’s fair to say they haven’t exactly shown themselves in the best light when they turned up on my doorstep for a few weeks.

Well fuck me, we seem to have moved out of a tardis!

Hah, see my comment at the top of the page.

    Ha! Clearly a common issue.

The most annoying thing about it is that we don’t need most of it cos the house is pretty much fully furnished.

I’m shattered from this weekend, work’s gonna be a slog this week!

I've just thrown out a pile of stuff which I brought here a few weeks ago. Moving is just lunacy.

  • Just put an offer in on the house we like and it was only bloody accepted!

First time buyers so it helped with them accepting our offer.

    Now the fun stuff begins...

    Any tips?

Try not to do the exchange on the same day, it's a fucking nightmare when you're being pressured out of your old house and can't actually get into the new one yet.

The woman I was buying off wasn't prepared at all and was finding it all too much, she said she was going to call the police if I didn't stop putting my stuff in the house. I said go right ahead, I own this house now, so it's only you they'll be throwing out. Stupid cow.

    Great news, congrats!

A few things learnt from completing on our first house this year:

When you have the survey report, read it thoroughly to decide if there are any further inspections you need to have done. We spent about £7-800 on specialist inspections but it flagged several issues which the sellers paid to rectify and saved us thousands.
You can also contact the surveyor with questions if anything is unclear. We had a concern that caused a delay with us completing that was purely down to woolly wording in the report, easily cleared up with a call.

Don't let the sellers or their agents put pressure on you at any stage. We were constantly told how most purchases complete within x weeks or months but it's different for everyone. Not all mortgages are straightforward, not all houses are in perfect condition. They threatened to pull out a couple of times but ultimately it would only cause a further delay for them to start from scratch.

Let your solicitor deal with the sellers agent. I was the main contact with ours for most of the process and they were bloody awful. As soon as I let our solicitor take over, she put the agent in their place and was a great help in taking the pressure off. It's what you're paying them for at the end of the day!

Fingers crossed yours go smoothly but worth keeping these in mind should they crop up. Best of luck, mate!

Although it cost a little more, I kept our flat for an extra month after buying the house. It gave us plenty of time to move everything in a more relaxed way (even though it wasn't very relaxed). It also gives you time to organise as you go, putting stuff in the right place etc. Otherwise that part either never gets done or it's like moving all over again.
  • Yes. Definitely do that. Never try and move out and in at the same time.
  • We did. Used a removal company though. No way we could have done that ourselves in a day.
  • Yep. All that.

When we bought our first house we had a couple of weeks overlap, spent the time painting and moving in gradually. We didn’t have much stuff back then though as we had a furnished let.

The move we’ve just done was part ex, we had all weekend and fuck me did we need all weekend!

If you have got an overlap you could even consider getting professional cleaners in before you move any stuff in.

  • Cheers guys, definitely all good things to consider.

Been a bit of a whirlwind day really.  Managed to get a mortgage arranged at a really good price (fairly tricky as I am on a temporary contract and we still have a fairly high childcare costs) but the mortgage brokers we are using (free online company from Mr Martin Lewis) have been outstanding.  Will use them for the solicitors fees as well and so the main thing left for me to fully organise at the moment is a building survey for later in the process.

I completely understand the overlapping of the current property but I think it may not actually be financially possible for us to.  We are renting so have to give one months notice, meaning that there will actually probably be a small overlap for us to use.  Only moving across town and have a friend from church who is known as the moving guy to help.

Can't be anymore stressful than moving from Woking to Devon by ourselves with two kids under three!

Surveys are WELL worth the money. Don't scrimp on them.

Use a removal company if you possibly can.
Holding the wrong end of the stick since 2009.
  • Can survey and solicitor fees be taken out of the Lifetime ISA I have?

First time buyer myself. Looking to buy in the next few months. Got about 22k in the LISA but not much spare elsewhere.
equinox_code "I need girls cornered and on their own"
  • They can be included in the mortgage. So assuming your LISA is your deposit then it is one and the same unless you are absolutely maxing out your mortgage offer already.
  • Nice, cheers. Nothing about the process of moving pleases me.
equinox_code "I need girls cornered and on their own"
  • I assume so anyway, should be able to. Always best to check with the broker/provider.

It's a complex nightmare but trust me having your own place makes it worth it.
  • We've been looking for a place for the last month, put in an offer yesterday and today got accepted!

First time buyers - so excited, anxious, scared.

The house needs a lot of work done (I am useless at DIY) but hooooly shit balls.

This has been a long time coming.
  • Nice! Exciting times!

We are seeing a couple of architects and structural engineers this weekend for work on our purchase, before seeing (more) builders next week.

It’s on a hill, and the garage has a sloping ground. That’s put a dampener on things for me cos i understand levelling it to make a gym will cost a bomb. :(
I am a FREE. I am not MAN. A NUMBER.
  • Just fill it with sand mate.

    Also nice one Mike, congrats.
  • How sloping and how much of a bomb? Buying a couple of cubic metres of concrete, wheel barrowing it in and leveling it isn't that hard and shouldn't cost that much.
  • London innit "well it'll be 400 quid just to park the van outside mate"
