I once started the thread in September and most people thought it was too early even for musings. My intention was to see what games people have been enjoying which may help me decide what else to play. Much like what Reg may have intended with this thread.

I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Anyway, now that this thread has been derailed enough. I would like to contribute.

The best game I've played this year that was released this year is...
    Spoiler:

And it wasn't even a hard pick.
  • Certainly the game I most want to play.

A price drop at Zavvi has occurred. Hopefully other places will follow soon.
  • I want to play Neir, but I rode a horse from one part of the map to another for the better part of an hour in Zelda and it'll have to do a lot to top the joy of just existing in that world.

The only game I've played this year that was released this year that might have any chance of troubling any theoretical best of lists is Thimbleweed Park. The only other game I've played this year that was released this year was Zelda.

The actual best games I've played (and mostly discovered) this year are Forza Horizon 2 & 3, Shadow of Mordor, Rocket League and Threes!

Speedrunners gets a mention. I don't even know when that was released.
  • I was enjoying Nier until I got side tracked by DiRT4 which is top five for me so far.. will get back to Nier directly.

There's a surprising lack of Persona 5 in that spoiler.

Yeah, I noticed you were stuck on a mission and forgot to reply. Sorry about that.

If you want want help from here on out I'll try to be prompt. Awesome game.

P5 was great, but it's been a strong year. Persona 5 may not even be top 5, surprisingly.
  • All the people I know in the flesh have said that P5 feels like a hollow retread of 4 to its detriment. I also had the killer of 4 spoiled to me via this chat, but I doubt i'll ever get round to it anyway.

Yeah, I noticed you were stuck on a mission and forgot to reply..

No worries. I just reloaded the mission to make them spawn again.. which seemed bonkers.

  • I think when people compare P5 to P4 negatively that they're forgetting something. Story and content-wise, P5 stands up very nicely to P4, and thematically it is stronger.

Rather, I think P5 gets battered by Golden. It's easy to forget how much content was added, streamlined and expanded that P5, by itself, feels somewhat anemic by comparison.

The moderate slog of some of the later dungeons and the lack of school social stuff could be easily sorted by a Platinum version, which I think would stand up very well.

Yeah, it was a known bug on Day 1 and it was supposed to have been patched. Still easy to run around and not get the drop you need, though.

That's fair enough, I find it interesting at least that the two people I know who were most excited for it (one got it in Japanese cos he speaks das lingo) bounced really hard off it.

Far from it, at least the hollow part. Gameplay is a little too similar, but thematically it's far more interesting.

Edit: Never mind. Got interrupted mid-post and stuff happened here while I was gone.
  • I mean I trust Cint and Japanoboy about equally, but obviously I find the matters comments about the game's social and thematic things slightly more interesting given it's his degree specialisation.

Anyway I should shut up as i'll likely never play it or finish 4G

Dunno if you're counting me here but yeah, I bounced off it too. Golden is just too incredible

Yeah, but it's golden specifically and not just Vanilla, right?

I mean, I loved vanilla P4 but post-Golden there's a whole different level of content expectation.

    Thought as much.

Content for content, dungeon for dungeon - P5 stands up to P4. While it doesn't have a crew or mystery that grabs and enthralls like P4, it makes up for that with social commentary out the arse and dope as fuck marriage of concept and story.

It just feels light despite the mega-length next to proper All Time Great (and second Top 10 mention of the day) Persona 4: The Golden.
  • Doesn't this crunch more knowing they had a better basis readily available but they made a clone of the superseded game?

I suppose it is difficult to make a huger game first hit but they've somewhat spoiled their audience a bit it seems.

(For what it's worth I played a bit of p4g and didn't really get into it too much because, I guess cutely, the fear of missing out (on good powers) has a bit of a paralysing and draining effect on me. I guess im not a fan of choices that are about personality having a mechanical game effect).

P3, 4 and 5 all followed the same basic structure and it wasn't until the portable versions that 3 and 4 got extra content - 3 gave us a female protagonist and associated romance options, 4 kept the single protagonist and just went content crazy.

It's worth remembering, vanilla Persona games run to 70-80 hours per playthough- they're not "light" games where anything has been skimped on, they're massive.

It's just that P4 added a whole load on the end of that which can take you well over 110 hours, if not 120. That just crazy for a trad RPG.

And P5 added a lot. The battle system was much better, faster and more fun, Mementos made side quests easier to do, and jobs and shops served a purpose in a lot of sidequests.

Plus, social links were worked into the main game systems even more than in the previous games, so it was far from a reskin. It's just that many of the improvements were purely mechanical (no bad thing) while Golden was so fucking good it would be nigh impossible to follow. It suffers from Metroid Prime 2 syndrome in that it's a merely great sequel to a seminal game.

    I'd buy a Golden-style update in a heartbeat, though.
