Tried doing it on my iPhone. Constantly fails and gives me Error Code 30.
Now using the desktop app, and you guessed it. That’s failing too.
Jesus Wept!
It’s great when it works but boy when it goes wrong does it ever go wrong. Had a nightmare when they transitioned everything from version 1 to version 2 of their app. Constantly had to reboot each speaker.
Fuck this piece of shite. Categorically refuses to update over my network no matter what I try, reducing it to being an expensive paperweight. Back to John Lewis it goes tomorrow. Life is too short for this pish.
Yeah, sounds shit. I’ve got one of those and it just worked, no issues at all. You’ve either got a faulty one or it’s got some weird issue with your network. Could you try hot spotting to your phone instead? The only issue I’ve ever had with Sonos stuff is when I changed router briefly, the fuckers just wouldn’t work. Router was shit anyway so ditched it, but I never found a work around for the issue.
It’s a shame. Lovely piece of kit. Good sound. But fuck it. If it’s that much of a problem just to get it working out of the box, then that’s grief I just don’t need. Back it goes, and the search for an alternative continues.
Not sure what your budget is but a couple of HomePod minis set in stereo work well and can be used as smart hubs etc. I’ve got a few dotted around my place. You can send whatever sound from any apple device to them.
Had similar with the Ikea ones. The only saving grace with them is they have a LAN connection. So when the updates do what you're describing and won't wifi, you can plug in.
Firmware and software updates are the one thing Sonos is shit at, in my experience. You get locked out until the upgrade is done correctly, so any hiccups in updating really screw you over.
Yup. Speaker won’t work out of the box until updated. Won’t update. It’s a paperweight. Absolutely useless. It’s fascinating to see just how much of a thing this is on their support forums, and still they’ve done fuck all to fix what has apparently been a problem for years.
I’m assuming it’s the speaker firmware that it’s trying to update and failing, because it’s the same issue with both the phone and desktop apps I’ve been having.
Returned it to John Lewis. Bless ‘em, they’re so good at returning stuff. No quibbles.
Swapped it out for what turns out to be a much better, simpler, and slightly cheaper option. Gone for a set of Ruark MR 1 Mk2’s, which sound absolutely stunning for a hundred quid less than the Sonos…and don’t have a fucking app!
More later.
Holy shit! These are frankly incredible for their size and price…
£349 down to £319 with the £30 off deal for signing up to the My John Lewis app.
Seriously impressive. Blows the sound quality of Sonos out of the water for less money.
It can depend on the device too, not just the app. I have a couple of Google Nest Audios.
- Using Apple Music and casting on my Sony phone is pretty much faultless.
- Using Apple Music and casting on my Samsung phone is very much a lottery as to where the sound will come from, and, if it comes from your phone, be prepared to disconnect, re-cast, kill the app, reconnect, restart the phone, etc.etc.etc. until it comes out of the speakers.
