Tiger as the sports breakout star though? I think he is iconic. Hard call.

The '70 World Cup (his 2nd) is really what made him. Many believe it was a showcase for Football worldwide and lit the fuse on the amount of money it attracted. Many also credit Pele with being a major factor in that. Of course it could be said that wasn't a conscious decision by him. Ali was far more self aware.
70 was his last. That was the Mexico one, is that the one you mean? It was the first one broadcast in colour, and the first time it was shown live around the world, so I suspect you do.
Aye. 1970 was his 2nd time in a winning world cup team. He played for Brazil when they won it in '58 - he was 17 then. Had a hat trick in the semi final and scored twice in the final. He scored in the '70 final but set a couple up too.
1970 was his third. They won in 1962 as well.

Think he got hacked out by bad tackles in the earlier rounds though? Could be wrong on that.

Somewhat baffled by the exclusion of Kennedy in the leader category.  Mandela should have been in the activists category but then he'd be up against Ghandi, Pankhurst and co. and the beatification of Mandela by the BBC would be at risk of being shanked.

That’s a weird dichotomy. How was Ghandhi not a leader?

No good as a leader. Lots of rhetoric, but he lost his head in a crisis.

You're right. The classification scheme is somewhat flawed. Mandela is a great leader too of course.

He had plenty of flaws. Should have kept his trousers on too. Iconic though. No doubt about that?

    Shagging Marilyn Monroe?
  • Gandhi wasn’t a leader in a government sense while Nelson Mandela was president of South Africa

The Missile Crisis which was one of his finest hours was created by him plonking missiles on the Russian/Turkish border - forcing Russia to make some sort of response. If he hadn't tried that on then the whole may not have happened. Still - must have been quite a ride at the time.
