  • So the wife is going to London for a Hen do.. she needed to leave the house at 5.30

She comes to bed around 4am having been working and packing until then. She then reads on her phone until 5am. At which point I wake up to get myself and the baby ready to take her.. she announces she needs to close her eyes for 15 minutes cos she hasn't slept all night.

    It's an interesting theory.

I've always been amused the the 'ten minutes' they take to get ready as you're about to walk out the door, is exactly the same amount of of time as the 'ten minutes' I'll take to finish this last beer with mates and get home

I genuinely don't get which bit of the statement you were unsure about

Working Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits were both brought in by 'New' Labour and replaced existing benefits and forced people to more actively apply for them, which also created jobs in the maintenance of these benefits

Generally the right wing would be in favour of lower taxes, whereas the left prefer higher taxes as they know better how to redistribute the money

Personally I have a little faith in my fellow man and think the ideals of noblisse oblige exist in most people, and I much prefer a small government, that keeps it's interactions with me (as a private citizen) to a minimum, that includes taking my money and redistributing it. Happy for governement to keep going to battle with business though, as it should be serving me not global corporations

In my experience, and as a huge generalisation, the more people have, the less inclined they are to give it away.  (I am, conversely, often astonished and humbled by the generosity of people who have very little.)  Hence we need taxation - particularly of the rich.

Same. Conversely I am always mildly surprised at how conservative well off people are when splashing their cash around on other people, and how quickly they'll ask for that pint you owe them back.

I make a point about a political philosophy, and the rebuttal is a question about macro economics. I'm not an economist, I can't say how much tax is enough, I've never seen exactly where all the money goes, and I'm not sure we'll ever get to know in truth. I've no problem with taxing the rich or massively increasing corporation tax. Would much prefer to tax entities rather than people

Maybe it seems naive to think that noblisse oblige exists, but I do think that. Also the people who are being taxed aren't the rich. My point wasn't an "I'm alright Jack" post stating I earn enough everyone else can go fuck, it was about asking whether the state or the citizen knows better how to spend the citizens money. If we believe the state know best then surely we abolish all benefits that give cash and stick to food/housing/clothing vouchers

  • Yeah, I'm with Tin. Tax is a necessary thing. No one likes it, but we need it to run our society.

The precurser to the current tax credits was family credit, which was only available to people with kids. You still had to actively claim that as well.

The system for Working Tax Credits is shit, and has a poor take up as a result, but the proposal of not taxing rich people instead seems a worse system to me.
