  • £199 from argos. Will get you the model number in a bit

  • Yeah, I have one from maybe 7 years ago that is still decent and my current work/PS5 option. Amusingly, it was the same as the one my mother in-law actually had until my nephews commandeered it for their Xbox.

Is there a recent update for it? I think I paid about 250 for mine back in 2013.

Ooh, just had a quick look. That looks spot on. This one? I just googled Samunsg 32 inch Argos.

  • Yeah i think I bought the £249 version. Only difference is 1080 p vs 720p for the £199.

There was a sale on at the time hence i got 2

720p! Only just clocked that. How is 720p and 'HD Ready' still a thing in 2021?! I would've thought 1080p would be a standard minimum by now.

Will see if the father in-law will stretch another £50. An obvious choice if it were me, but he has a weird habit of skimping on things. He'll happily spend £500 on a new drill, but will swear there's no discernable difference between a Samsung TV and a Logik one, or whatever that budget brand is that you see in Tesco's.

    Cheers though Mink.
  • I guess if you're only going to watch SD then 720 is actually better cos it's less stretched. But yeah, it's strange they even bother making the screen would have thought it wouldnt be economic by now.

i got one of these for the kid's bedroom for chrimbo. does netflix, prime, youtube. 1080p, even some kind of HDR. £200
    no issues with it.

  • I tried one of those phillips tvs but i had to return it as the wifi receiver in it was too weak.

Wouldn’t penetrate the kitchen wall to the living room router. Samsung had no issue. Its weird mightt have had a duff unit?

  • It's not used a lot for wireless stuff, mainly my daughter uses it for gaming, but not had any wifi connections with it. It's upstairs and router is downstairs, so it's going through a wall and floor, but it's prob only 5-6 metres away in a straight line.

  • The LG nano 86 has vrr and 2.1 hdmi but you need to get a decent panel, i had a dodgy one which got light bleed.

The Samsung Q70 is good as is the Sony x900

Trouble is the sony is £749.

The lg nano 866 is £699

In budget but lacking next gen console features, but still with a decent refresh rate in game mode and a good pic is the Samsung Tu8577 55 inch which is £629

  • I should say theres nothing wrong with the phillips. The ambilight feature is actually rather good and reduces eye strain

I had to buy usb powered bias lighting striips to fit to my LG BX oled but they dont react to picture colour change like the ambiliight

Yeah i just got unlucky with my panel on my 866 Nano

  • It's totally not without its flaws, and you do need to adjust the settings to get the best out of it, but it's absolutely one of the best in its price range. As Which said:

    Which? verdict: A TV triumph
The 55NANO866NA is a doozy. It looks good and sounds even better. If you’re looking to spend under £1,000 on a 55-inch TV this should be at the top of your shopping list.

Just turn that dynamic backlight off as soon as you can!
  • Yeah the dynamic backlight is crazy. Like a white stripe. Turn that right off.

If mine didnt have awful light bleed on the edges i would have kept it. I still think currys dropped it and the case wasn’t flush with the screen. But it comes with you A.l.l and vrr plus 2.1

Took the chance to fib to the mrs that all modern tvs bar oleds were a bit shit lol....

The Philips ambilight stuff is fantastic btw, just ask SG.
  • Ill definitely check out the nano, just to say I'm in euro, so it's 590euro for the ambilight. Reminds me of that Xbox tech, where a low Res extension not the game scene was projected on the walls around the TV.

  • The thing with ambilight is you can buy add on lights for it to place around yhe room. In fact if you like the light tech but not the tv you can buty a phillips system ghat has a hdmyi throughput box that can link to any tv or device. The. You can add up to 8 light sources incliuding strip lights and these 1/2 globes. Look on the website its called Hue

They using an iPad as a TV?!

Just tried the room thing and our creaky arse floorboards are playing havoc! Have had to give up for now. Still sounds great, but short of discovering how to levitate, I'm not sure I'll get this 'Trueplay' to work.

Hey. I have a Beam, plus two Sonos One SL surrounds in the living room. I also have an older Sonos One in the kitchen.

TruePlay significantly improves the quality of sound in both set-ups for me, and interestingly, in different ways. Defo worth it. Some people get better results with a slightly different tuning method (focus on just one part of room for example). Worth reading up on it.

I wish I'd seen your Beam musings earlier actually as I've struggled with audio lag in my surround set-up and would have pointed out the potential issues there. My TV can't pass through the 5.1 signal quick enough to keep up with the image, resulting in a small delay (depending on the content, some is fine). It's important to check for any issues with the TV model before investing in a Sonos based surround. This is because you have no option (apart from introducing a splitter) other than going through the TV with your audio.

I've tested with both HDMI-Arc and optical connections and the issue is present in both. Either way the TV is introducing some kind of processing on the 5.1 signal that causes the delay.

I think the newer Bravia sets are fine. Again, this is only an issue with 5.1.

However, when it works, with the surrounds on it sounds fucking ridiculous!

Also, music played over the system with the surrounds set to "ambient" sounds amazing.
