Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • Yes they do.

Went to Forbidden Planet to buy Powergrid but they didn't have it so got Pandemic instead. Hope it's not shit.
  • Someone should make a new version of chess. That's the only one i still like.
  • Startrek made 3d chess. I saw it advertised as one of those things you could buy in a Sunday newspaper magazine.

Might try and sneak the expansion in before christmas, if just for the petri dishes
Man those petri dishes look cool. Had a family member pop up with a request for a Christmas present idea, so she is getting me Escape: The Curse of the Temple. It is the new hotness on BGG at the mo, co-op dice rolling game with tiles randomly building the temple, played to a 10min soundtrack with gongs and doors shutting etc. that mean you have to get to a room or be out of somewhere by a certain time. Looks like frantic fun for Christmas morning.
    Sounds amazing. Rough price?

30 of your English pounds if bought from the nice people at GamesLore online.

Ticket to ride is currently reduced on iPad, anyone know what the difference is between that and TTR pocket?

  • Afaik pocket is designed for phones, main TTR for iPad. Not sure if there are significant gameplay differences.
  • Cheers. I'll probably just dive in and give it a go for £1.50.

  • I've spent a few good hours over the past few days playing Ticket to Ride: Europe and Dixit, which have both proved immensely fun and easy to pick up. Dixit is great and it's really fun to try and come up with interesting hints as the storyteller. Ticket to Ride has proved - after everyone picked up the rules - to be a runaway success with the whole family as well, so I dare say we'll see a few more games of it over the Christmas break.

Mage Knight is currently sitting under the tree, though I've been given permission to open it early if I want...
  • Do you think I could play Dixit with a mixed group of say 4 or 5 including parents and a wife and a sister in law?
I literally know nothing about it except it's supposed to be good, and it's sitting under our tree.
  • Oh, definitely.

I think you could play it with pretty much anyone, really. It's completely different to any other board game I've played but the idea is extremely easy to grasp and I'd say it's probably at it's best with people of different generations/backgrounds.

It really is a charming little game. I'm eyeing up Dixit 3 already, just to get some more cards in the mixer!
  • Cool. I will definitely try it then. Roughly how long does a game take?
  • 30 minutes or so.

    This is refreshing.
  • That sounds absolutely perfect.
  • It'll possibly take a couple of rounds to "get" it, but once you do it's great fun.

The basic concept revolves around giving a clue about a picture card, obscure enough that not everyone will guess what it is, but not so obscure that nobody can guess it. You move 0 places on the board if everyone/no-one guesses your card, 3 places if some people do.

Each player chooses a card from their own hand that they think is similar to your clue. You shuffle them all up and lay them flat. People vote for which card they think is yours.

For example; My hint here might be "The greedy one!" You don't know which card is mine, but you have to try and guess.

If you guess right, it's good for you! If people vote for the card you placed down, it's good for you (you move 1 extra space on the board). It's all about interpretation and creative thinking.

FUN. Err... sorry if I've just completely confused you. I'm tired.

Would love to hear your thoughts on your first playthrough. Found it fairly difficult to get my head around myself.
If you want to wait for Christmas to play I'd have a read of the rule book beforehand (both of them!), there are a lot of different systems that you'll have to keep track of.
Also there's a youtube playthrough of one round, found that massively helpful.

  • I can't play anything with my family that takes more than 2 minutes to explain so this Christmas I've gone for Jungle Speed. Might try and throw in some Escape from Atlantis if they seem receptive.

Tiger you should come down to London and we can get wasted and go to London on Board.
  • That sounds fun.

We can get drunk and keep asking where the Lolcannon spawns in Catan.
  • Taking ticket to ride back home for Christmas!

Also my board game reviews got printed in works staff magazine!!!

Convinced my wife and in-laws to play Catan this afternoon instead of Monopoly that they wanted to play. They absolutely loved it and want to play again on Christmas Eve. At last! I've been pestering them to try it for over a year.
  • So... Mage Knight. It seems absurdly complicated at first (I was actually starting to regret asking for it, after taking over an hour to set up and go through the basic rules), but I'm starting to get a grip on things now after the first turn of the tutorial game. It's fucking brilliant. Appears to have huge levels of depth and the potential for high strategy becomes obvious really quickly.

    I'm Tovak, 'cos he's boss.
  • Fucking hell, what a game.

Final turn, the moons aligned. A Frost Dragon appeared out of the lake in front of the great capital city, but all the cards were waiting for him. Blocking his icy breath with a boosted Cold Defense, I roasted him with Fire Wall and Fire Ball and won the game by a good margin!

We made a few mistakes along the way, and certain systems still have me scratching my head, but all in all.... just wow.
  • Want but cannot justify, sigh.

YES! It is amazing!  Also, Goldyx is a beast, just because his skill token Flight is an absolute monster for getting you around the board.
One thing I didn't realise in my first few playthroughs, when you level up and can choose between 2 skills the unchosen one goes into a pool and when someone else levels up they can choose to take a skill token from this pool rather than one of their one. Customisation possibilities THROUGH THE ROOF!!!!

  • No one thing is massively complicated but there are just a lot of things to keep track of as the game progresses. Just takes a few games to get a fairly decent hold of it. Although I'm about 10 games in and still making mistakes

  • The post midnight mass present unwrap has gone well. My sister picked me up Power Grid without any guidance at all.

She is learning well, can't wait to crack it open properly tomorrow
