Do Boardgames Dream of Miniature Porn?
  • ....actually I linked the list that's about 6 years old. They've a different one from 2010

  • Carcassonne features highly on all those lists. The wife has mentioned Lost Cities herself, and something called Fast Track.
  • Smallworld was great! Came very close to giving up but persevered and glad we did.

Imagine it's even better with three or more players.
  • Boardgame day at the Johnson house.

First off was Quirkle. Decent game played with the kids. You have to match colours and shapes to build a grid. Quite good, not a lot of strategy. One for the kids really.

Then Dixit. I enjoyed it, but the kids got frustrated, and they kept bending the cards. ARGH!

Next up, Cluedo for kids. Carnival Mystery or something. Can't say I'm looking forward to that much.

  • Sorry to bang on about this but I have just finished about 4hrs of playing Legendary again.
    It's really good.
It's a shame it's hard to get hold of here in the UK. The missus got it sent over from Funagain Games in the US.

I'm tempted to get a board game for the misses and I. It'll probably be TTR or Pandemic.

Is there anything like HeroQuest knocking around?
It's a goddamn snoozefest out there.
  • Descent I think. I'm selling Pandemic if you're interested?
  • Finished the marathon with Game Of Life. As shit as I remember it.

Possibly. How much are you wanting for it?

  • Game of Thrones sesh this aft.  Was pretty hard going, and seemed a bit biased in my favour with the starting positions (although my strategy was more solid than the others').  I enjoyed it, think it'll be better now we understand the finer points of the game though.

  • Lannister?
I think I read something about the Lannisters having a map advantage or something. It might have been Baratheon. Can't remember.

  • The main aim is to get 7 castles or strongholds, starting as Baratheon (yellow) meant I had a big chunk of the map to myself.  The unclaimed areas down the bottom are still protected, but not very.  As you can see from the pic, the others all start quite close to each other.  Baratheon also goes first, which can be very useful when planning strategy.

  • @worKid:

Dominion is the business. SG, my missus and I have been hammering it again these holidays. It gets expensive, but it's sooo worth grabbing some more expansions. Intrigue is awesome, Prosperity is awesome, Seaside is awesome, and there's plenty more. Even 2 sets makes a big difference to the combinations you can create, and once you understand the basics, you can have some completely different experiences.

I can also thoroughly the Dominion Shuffle app on google play. Chuck in a few parameters and let it decide. Has had us trying a bunch of combos we wouldn't otherwise have tried.
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Nice. Thanks. I can see how the different sets give a very different game.
  • I can thoroughly, apparently.

    I can also not finish
I'm still great and you still love it.
  • Alright, recommend me a single expansion set. Just one. Pretend it's the only one we'll ever get.
  • Have you played many games with attack cards?

If you don't mind a bit of down and dirty, then Intrigue might be the go, adds some very nice wrinkles to things.

Seaside is crazy, and has some amazing cards, but I'm not sure I'd want it as my only expansion.

Prosperity, of the ones I've tried, is the only other one I'd seriously consider. It's amazing, adds stuff like platinum (Costs 9 to buy, worth 5) and some other very expensive but crazy powerful cards. Can make things too easy though, so games can be very quick power play styles.

SG also had alchemy. That's a small expansion, but it's a bit shit, tbh.

So yeah, I reckon Intrigue, if we're saying only one.
I'm still great and you still love it.

Board game day booked with friends this Sunday, gonna have my first go at Small World and also try out something called Race for the Galaxy!
  • Beware: RftG is notoriously dense, although I'm sure that is is supposed to play a little like San Juan.
  • Yeah WorKid, I'll second Face's comments.  Intrigue is a good move as a first (and potentially only) expansion because it's a second base-set so it has copies of all victory and treasure cards which means that you can potentially play with more than four people, and it has some great cards.  Each expansion seems to bring in a new mechanic to the game and Intrigue is all about cards with multiple abilities that you can choose between when you play them, so the cards stay interesting for longer and are generally useful for more of the game.

Seaside brings in 'duration' cards that do stuff for more than one turn, and it is awesome, but it can involve a bit of book-keeping.  Unless you really like getting into this aspect of the game it's possibly not the greatest choice as an only expansion.

Prosperity brings in loads of money and ways of acquiring it, including super powerful cards.  The games are usually fast and furious, and while it is a blast this is really it's only trick.

Go with 'Intrigue' I'd say :-)
  • Intrigue sounds good. I like the idea of getting nasty.
  • I'm pretty sure Donald X. himself designed the expansions to be released in a specific order, as if I recall correctly he designed all 600 odd cards all together and then split them into the specific packs based on certain criteria, so I think Vanilla was Actions, Intrigue was Interaction, Seaside was Duration etc...

Anyone who is even vaguely interested in the game should really check out the game specific forums on boardgamegeek.com as for each edition of Dominion Donald X. has posted the card lists and their genesis on there and how he decided how certain bits worked etc, all very interesting reading.

For you friend, £25, which is about a tenner cheaper than you'll get it with postage in some places, and a tenner cheaper than you'll get it without postage in others. It's been played about 8-10 times, the cards are all fine but one iffection card is missing (I think it's Milan) but that doesn't really matter at all as it is very, very, very, very rare that any scenario will ever come up where one infection card missing will make any significant difference to any game you play.

The episode of The Long View podcast made RftG sound pretty interesting. If you like the game I'd recommend you check out the episode. Although I'd agree with Tempy, doesn't sound like the kind of game you can just try, seems dense.

Also, people who love Mage Knight, The Long View also did a fantastic show on it a couple of months back. I've listened to it a couple of times. It's the host, a BGG guy with a tonne of plays and the guy that translated the rule book. Super nerdy, super fun

  • A fine board gaming Christmas for me, received: -

Escape: The Curse of the Temple
This is the 10min co-op game played to the MP3. Played 2 frantic 2-player games so far, first we didn't even find the exit, the 2nd I was out safely with a minute to spare whilst the missus tried desperately to roll the final key she needed, she got it with about 8 seconds to spare, great fun.

Dungeons & Dragons: Wrath of Ashardalon
Never played a proper RPG so asked for this, apparently a lighter, board game interpretation. Not played it yet but had a good fiddle with the components. Has some massive enemy minatures and a separate adventure book with 13 senarios, gonna hopefully play the solo adventure at the weekend.

    The Boss
Amazing little mafia card game. Involves area control, bluffing, deduction and hand management, played several games with Mrs Surveyor already, reckon it will be even better with 3 or 4.

    Incan Gold
This was great fun played with a full quota of 8 people. Light push your luck game involving heading further and further into a temple in search of treasure, deciding before the turn of each card whether to go further in or head back to camp with what treasure you have amassed already, once 2 of the same hazard cards are revealed everyone still inside losses their current treasure.

As Shinji said above, need to perhaps lay off the board game purchases for a while, play what I have, try and kick the acquisition disorder!

It is really cool. Nice artwork and is relatively cheap too, GamesLore have it for £15.99. Nice game to play on the coffee table with a glass of something in front of the TV.

We also play a lot of Citadels in that way.

Unfortunately I shall have to pass for now. Too poor and can't eat board games so I'll have a look at stuff after payday.
