They had Wolfenstein but I'm waiting for Sniper 3. I played the first games demo but none of the actual games. I'm in the mood to shoot some conkers.

  • Tomb Raider Legend

I finished this multiple times back when it came out on 360 but, going back after all these years and playing the PS3 port (which is a terrible port, by the way) was a big mistake.
Level design is all over the place, the controls are awkward, the camera is a mess and the less said about those motorbike levels, the better.

All in all, this experience has sullied my memory of a great Tomb Raider game. I had planned on moving on to replaying Underworld too, but I'd rather that memory remain untarnished.

Is Sniper Elite worth a go then? I was tempted to get it on the XBone.
It's a goddamn snoozefest out there.
  • I heard from many sources that it is almost utter shite. Having just completed wolfenstein I would heartily recommend it.

The first Sniper Elite was pretty alright. Along with fairly realistic ballistics you had a camouflage index system similar to MGS3 which meant you had to actually stalk through the levels and if you were getting shot at, you were generally doing something wrong.

Sniper Elite 2's only + point is the shameless X-Ray gore porn on offer. Entire game is a broken mess of shitty level designs and rote scripted encounters that barely have the supporting struts for the stealth mechanics the game apparently includes. I got it for free on Steam and really just play it to complete and get it out of my installed list.

SE 3 by all accounts is more of the same.

I tried the first Assassin's Creed because the pre-release videos made it look awesome. Sadly, it was utter pants. I got suckered into AC III because (again) the videos looked good and I was intrigued by the setting, but it was also complete underwear.

The series is on my permanent persona non grata list, unless AC V comes bundled with a gizmo that plugs into your console and gives amazing blow jobs, or something.

Fiddly enough to make me give up after the first chapter.

I imagine nothing's happened to her, Ubisoft have just stopped running around going "look, we've got a pretty lady working for us!" And so they should.
  • They've basically got Aisha Tyler instead, to fill their female quota at E3. And that's all Ubisoft really used Jade Raymond for, anyway.

Sounds like MGS2 on any system, to me. But then I'd rather be punched in the groin than play through MGS2 again, so maybe I'm biased.

If by "interesting" you mean "bat shit insane", then yes, I agree. A fat geezer on roller skates who throws C4 and a Flamenco dancing vampire called Vamp are definitely "interesting".

  • MGS2 is the only one I have completed.
    Watch a mate do MGS
    Can't play MGS3
Played an hour (gameplay) of MGS4

By 4 I found gaming had moved on in terms of controls, I felt like I didn't have enough fingers to press/hold the buttons it wanted. Clunky as fuck.

    No they are funny.

Interesting are the exploration of simulated experiences, the facelessness and puppetry that come with giving a player purchase over a character capable of deadly force, and how that relates to commanders and their soldiers.

MGS2 suffered from that, too. You could do a bajillion things, like lean whilst hiding in a locker, but you needed ten fingers on each hand to pull it off.

We clearly have very different tastes when it comes to humour. ;)

I thought this stuff was done in heavy handed, A Level Philosophy kind of way. Stuff like "Fission Mailed" and the reality/virtual reality cross over was handled in such an amateur way as to be painful to watch (or play, rather).

  • No doubt MGS2 suffered but I think at the time a lot of games did. So I probably tolerated it more.

I'd played MGS, Twin Snakes and 3 and loved them all, but given up on 2. So I went back and was determined to finish it. People rave about it so I kept thinking "maybe it gets better later", but IMO it just got worse.

I can't think of anything off the top of my head. Heck, even the Resident Evil games have a better plot than MGS2. Resi 4 may have been bat shit mental, but at least it made sense within the universe and its own set of rules. One of my clearest memories of MGS2 is having to wait for Otacon to stop sobbing whilst he told me his blummin' life story right at the start of a dramatic escape sequence. C'mon mate, save the revelations for therapy, right now we need to STFU and GTFO.

EDIT: Wait, had an idea. Final Fantasy XII and Xenoblade Chronicles had pretty solid plots, that held (or are holding) my attention over many tens of hours.

  • Resi 6.

Played through Leon's campaign coop and enjoyed it pretty much, but realised when starting chris 's bit solo I just couldn't muster the effort.

    Might return to it sometime.

Is it really 3x the length of Leon's bit? That would be one seriously generous game.

I just don't think it's the game's fault that narrative and plot aren't the same thing, and you're looking for plot - which is also fine of course but there are plenty of games for that.

People aren't raving about 2 because they can write an A to B IMDB style plot synopsis of it. The ending is hard to describe as to why it's so affecting to some people, like me and my brother, who in a discussion neatly compared it how the ending of Space 2001 is one of his favourite movie moments, but couldn't articulate exactly why. That's the appeal to a lot of us, I guess, that the games themes make your head fizz with ideas, questions, interpretable loose ends.

The best movies leave me feeling like that, and I love to get that feeling from a game that firmly knows it's a game, because graphical limitations and game logic will always break the 4th wall (the first thing I do in any 3rd person game ever, the more serious the better, is tappa tappa tappa away on the d-pad, making them move like Homer Simpson after an electric shock) so to embrace it anyway makes perfect sense. It's what gives you an experience removed from following a simple plot.
