Work - The pros and the cons...

Knowing the agency, I’d expect them to suggest you do X days per week rather than full time. It’s not an existing role, they don’t really know how much they might need from you.

  • Nothing that pays cash is beneath me, heh. It's frustrating because I didn't ask them to commit on good will because there might be a good opportunity out there, but I needed the flexibility to take.Lesson learned I guess.

Aye, but I didn't know how many days or from when so I told the other place not to secure the hours because they seemed to be only employing another full timer. Shot myself in both feet

Don't the previous 13 weeks normal working hours form up your contracted hours. No matter what the contract says, you have an implied contract based on the actual circumstances of your work. At least that's how I believe it to be, and I'd imagine if anything your rights were more secure being in Scotland. Might be worth looking into it, as this could form a change to your contract of employment, so a certain amount of notice has to be given

It sounds harsh but companies will very rarely show you goodwill, so don't do the same to them. I've accepted jobs before and ended up being there for only a few months because another opportunity pans out, just the way things go and the majority of companies understand it.
I'm falling apart to songs about hips and hearts...
  • I've done similar before. Said no to something potentially not as good as something that may, if I'm lucky, be better and found myself with nothing at the end of it. More than once too. Now I just say yes and then sort it out later if both happen. Granted it can also put you in a shit position of a different kind.
  • I know, i'm not ruthless with stuff do with cash and it always bites me. I expected better of my boss because there is no nonsense HR and it's a small company. Like I said, lesson learned.
  • CEX/Game?

Game should be starting hiring Christmas staff soon, and shifts generally start in September/October. I was always pretty flexible for Christmas staff on shifts.

I don't think it does, no.
  • You basically have no rights at work.

Pretty much. At one of the redundancy consultation meetings recently, one of our regional directors said she didn't care if you had 1 year or 8 years service. Loyalty counts for exactly fuck all, more so the bigger the company.

If you're interested in going for a job with us, let me know. We always recruit heavily in the run up to Christmas, one of our busiest times, 16hr contracts are standard, but there's always extra shifts going. Pays slightly above minimum wage, usually temp (y) but csn quite often go permanent. And i can get you copies of the interview questions and exercises etc.

  • Cheers man, I'll let you know. My plan right now is just to see what they give me for October, which will be an indication of their intent going forward. I have squirrelled away most of the money I've earned in the last few months and I know how to keep my outgoings modest.I am less concerned about my well being and more frustrated that the terms I was on with my boss got so roundly trampled.

Had an issue with implied contracts in my last job, as all the staff were on a fixed rota i.e. they worked the same shifts every week unless they took on extra shifts. Meant we were fucked if more than 1 person called in sick. They changed the terms and conditions when the new pension rules kicked in. Think it all depends what kind of contract you're on to start with, if it's zero hours then you've got no protection.
  • Mrs Poprock absolutely bossed her two interviews yesterday and today. One more scheduled for Monday. Looks like she’s going to be just fine and is going to be heading back into the world of architecture instead of slumming it with us mere designers. This is good, because architects pay better.
  • One of the jobs I interviewed for told me that they were really looking for someone less senior, so I recommended one of my colleagues.

She just got the job and handed in her notice here.

I’m really, really, fucking happy for her but I still need to find a job for myself, dammit!

  • Yearly reviews coming soon and like last year I need some help.

I'm a video editor outside of London or any similarly sized city of fog and disappointment yet we do big projects and work all over the UK and abroad. As a company we're doing fairly well.

Last years review went well and I went from
    Spoiler:
I've been increasing the amount of directing I've been doing and this year the owner said my most recent project is 'the best thing we've ever done'. I don't necessarily agree with that myself but I will be hanging that over his head in my review.

So I consider myself to be on a reasonably low salary and want to see it raised to
    Spoiler:
and ask for my job to change from a video editor to director/editor as career wise that's what I am after. This also allows me to take a more active and creative approach to projects. Basically I want to do more.

I'm torn as to whether i'm going to look like I am taking the piss or if it's entirely justified. The amount i'm asking for would probably be minimum if I was going for a new job. It's impossible to get a basis for what other people in my role in other companies are on as it varies so much.

    Any advice at all?

Aye, go for it. Sell them on the idea. You're in a bad situation because you're in a discipline that pays shit money. This is because there will always be some media graduate who'll do it for less than you're being paid. Everyone is an editor, and everyone is a director. Now that's clearly bollocks, but it's the nature of the industry now. We get away with it because what we do is highly specialised and not something you can learn at school or teach yourself, but the reality is that every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks they can do what you do.
So yeah, prove your worth to the company and sell them on the idea that you're actually a valuable asset.

    good luck

  • In the 50 odd years since they've been around no one has ever cared about the inhumans. And if they had the x-man rights, marvel wouldn't either.

His accent was all over the joint. English, American, sure I heard a bit of borat at one point as well.
