Work - The pros and the cons...
  • He moved in with Bob didn't he?
  • That would explain the provision of riot gear and restraining techniques.

Nope, moved to the crazy Isle of Man, which is a weird but lovely backwards place. I get to drive the TT course over the mountain to work everyday. It’s amazing.

Haven’t even met up with him yet!

Yep, we need our own team so I went the advanced route, amazing courses, loved it. On the list with the UK as well though if they need additional numbers.

  • This time last week I thought I’d nailed a new job for myself. Had a really great chat/meeting/interview with the directors of a company I really want to work for. Finished up with them asking to see a few examples of early-stage work from old projects, so they can see my process as well as the finished projects they already love – and with them promising to send me a selection of theirs, so I can see how they do things too.

A week later, I’m not feeling so positive. A couple of days ago they put a job ad online, for the job I’m hoping to get. So now I’ll have competition … And today I got an email from a mate to give me the heads up that they’ve asked him whether he can recommend anyone (to his credit, he didn’t know I was already talking to the company, and he instantly recommended me.)

I’m hoping they either have a couple of roles to fill, or they’re just doing a bit of due diligence and checking there isn’t anyone even better than me available. But it’s a bit deflating to see a job I thought was going to be mine get advertised on fucking LinkedIn.

ANYWAY. It’s Friday. Get the beers in.
  • Finding out about you not getting a job because it's elsewhere is always the worst.

    In Tempy land however
    Hey there,
Good news, we were impressed by your letter of application for *vague job I won't explicitly state here* and you are through to the next round of candidates.

At this stage, we're going to give you an opportunity to demonstrate your writing skills on 3 tasks.
  • Well that's something. Good luck with it.
  • TBH, I'd always, always recruit properly. It might be frustrating for you, but it makes sure they really did get the best candidate.
  • The deadline is on Monday, and I have a lot on this weekend. Very frustrating.

Pop, it would be unprofessional of them to not look at at least a few candidates for the job. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I'm sure they are just being thorough.
  • Any way you can put some stuff off to make time for this Tempy?
  • I'm rota'd in to work, so sadly not. The other stuff can wait, but it's going to let down like 5 people.
  • Let them down. Phone in sick.
You have to take these chances.
  • That ain't gonna fly, haha. I'll just get on with it and get done what I can get done.
  • Yet again, El Tigro made his boss look a fool because I'm infinitely better at assemblies than he is awww yeah. #yearofthetiger #kingofmakingkidsquiet #positivepraise #gimmeapayrise

Aye, agree with you and Dante there. I’d still prefer it if they’d just said so when we’ve been chatting. I know I would in their place.

ANYWAY. Sleep is for the weak Tempy. You’ll get it done. I have faith in you.
  • Passed my NPQML! Woo!

“What the fuck is that?” I hear you cry! Christ knows, but it should enhance the CV a bit.

I actually failed my first attempt cos my write up was shite, so was actually really nervous when the re-submission results came in yesterday.

  • Nice one!

  • Does anyone here read Holyrood magazine? I’m away for an interview at the end of the week to be their art director. Until I get a solid offer from anywhere, I’m still considering myself to be jobhunting …
  • I am still largely on the positive about Job Hunting, but I got a rejection with the whole "please note, we are unable to give feedback!" message from a Teaching Secretary position at the Uni of Glasgow. It's basically a £16k a year office job, and all the requirements are just standard office work, stuff I've done for years. I passed all the essential criteria, easily, and they can't even be bothered to explain why they can't reply.

It's horseshit - they should have the decency to reply to a fucking Graduate of theirs, especially one with 4 fucking years of Office Admin Experience! Argh!

Old uni pal of mine is their assistant editor. A niche magazine but supposedly on the up circulation-wise, and very highly regarded within the sector I understand.

They cleaned up at the Scottish Magazine Awards when I was there in November. The team seem to really love their Editor/boss, which is a rare thing.

I doubt they’ll be able to pay enough to make the commute from Glasgow worthwhile, but I’m going to go talk to them anyway. I’d quite like to work in magazines again, it’s been something like 18 years since I left the industry.

I know what it is! Well done, chap. Not easy to fit these extras in without killing yourself.

Warehouse Quality Controller (part stock control).

Been trying to find someone since July last year.

Appraisal today. A month ago was nominated for a leadership award. Based on the notes Ive seen Im gonna get nothing but criticism today. Go figure.

  • Saw this on Twitter, thought some here might be interested. Although I don’t think many of us could claim to be ‘underrepresented voices’ in the games world …

    void.garden is looking for writers
Hi, we are Gaeel and adriel, and we're putting together a magazine, called void.garden. It's about the weird and wonderful things that happen in the margins of video game development, in the minds of digital artists, and in the eyes of people who navigate these playful, artistic spaces

You're a developer, an artist, an explorer of digital worlds. You have stories to tell, things that happened to you in real or in virtual life, we'd like to publish those stories!

This is a paid gig, we believe in paying writers

We welcome everyone to apply, and we especially encourage people from under-represented backgrounds to do so; in particular if you are a woman, transgender (of all gender identities), non-white, disabled, or from an under-represented country. We want to hear your "unpublishable" stories; your rants about Y-up versus Z-up, an anecdote about meeting a dog, or an argument for using WoW-style rarity colour-codes in dialogue systems

There's no article too technical, or not technical enough, we want to hear what you have to say If you have more than one article to suggest, feel free to fill in the form multiple times

@Tempy although I doubt you have the free time right now …

Based on my regular dealings with various newspaper/freelance photographers, I don't envy anyone trying to make a living doing it these days. Such a shame.
  • I think it’s bloody rare to be a photographer on staff nowadays. I know the main newspapers retain a few, but can’t think of any magazines who do.

So many publishers are reduced to tiny budgets now and forced into using photo libraries instead of commissioning. Makes it hard to work as a photographer for editorial. As with any creative niche industry, there’s more chance of finding work in London because the sheer volume of people and businesses allows for a small specialism to generate enough money to live on.
