And Hawbaw too come to think of it.

Rooting and tooting for you HBJ, even though you completely ignored my George Formby pun.
retroking1981: Fuck this place I'm off to the pub.
  • Predictably got rejected from the Uni archives/job despite having my application looked over by H's wife, who is an actual factual librarian. Getting to the point where it's basically clear that unless someone gives me a leg up or I find the time and money to retrain I am going to be stuck doing fuck all for the rest of my life.
  • Must be hugely demoralising.  Sorry Temps.
  • Also: we cannot give feedback

Mate, the government gave you over £30k so I could study there, can you not just tell me what I fucked up?

    Teach?
  • You get paid to learn teaching don't you?

Tell them you want feedback or you will report them for discrimination.
They are a fucking university, I expect that shit from big business but not educators.

    +1
  • @Gonz Yeah you do, I think i'll be shit with kids, not strict enough. Seems to be the best step though.

They don't give feedback because 100s of people apply to each job. I've not had any from all the rejections in the last year.
  • It's still a pathetic system. If they can get through the applications in 4 days to tell me no, they can surely tell me what I was lacking, especially as I imagine it's a box ticking exercise. What pisses me off is it's the university I graduated from.

    Sorry Temps.

Have you considered TEFL? Get out of the country for a bit, learn some new skills? It’s less of a commitment than a full PGCE or whatever it’s called and getting away for a bit can help with refocusing. Worked for me anyway.
  • Well I have an interview at Penny Black coming up. Full time so i'll run the numbers and see if I am better off after the commute, might be good for a few months whilst I apply for more graduate stuff and teaching application etc.
  • Sympathies Tempy. If you do go down the teaching path let me know and I'll help as best I can. There are bursaries of £15,000 for English teachers if you go the PGCE route. I could probably help you get on a course down this way or via Schools Direct but probably not palatable to relocate.

Without stepping on stophs toes, I think teaching (as he would be) English or Media in the Scottish system may be more to his style. There is a lot more freedom in the curriculum, also payments for learning, and he should be able to walk into the Glasgow uni PGDE (a step up from PGCE) programme. Plus the guaranteed probation year pay and a dearth of media specialists up here.
  • Have you looked into copywriting Tempy?
I can't imagine it would be something you would want to do for a long term career but there are usually a fair few freelance roles about that could supplement your other income. If it is something that appeals it would be worth contacting some design focussed recruiters.
  • Yeah i've never had a response back from any copywriting job I've gone for, admittedly they've mostly full time ones asking for a relevant years experience.
  • I would give some recruiters a call about freelance jobs.
There is a bit of it about because a lot of places like design agencies can't justify a staff copywriter.
  • Sites like Upwork allow you to bid on individual projects. Might take a while to get going and you have to bid low initially, but you can probably make a bit from them once you get a few good reviews.
  • Yeah, they arent great for visual design, I always get outbid by people in Asia, but for writing that shouldn't be an issue.

I like Penny Black. There are definitely worse places to work for a while.

Probably. Things I have to weigh up though. A £70 a month, 45 minute commute potentially at 6am might not be conducive to a good time as I share a house with someone who does bar work, it also might not be great if I don't get a decent wage for it, also I don't want to make a career of it and I know having a full time job can seriously fuck with applying for other jobs.

I actually broke down at work yesterday and had to sit in front of my manager crying for about 5 minutes. Fucking pathetic.

It's a shit situation. There's no shame in reacting to it as such.

    Hugs.
  • Don't beat yourself up for being human Tempy.
That breakdown is your passion finding an outlet, it is your perseverance through the frustration that shows level of dedication that means you will make it eventually. A lesser person would have given up because giving up is easy.
  • I struggled post uni to find a job, eventually after a year of being unemployed i got a temp xmas job at Waterstones. That turned into a two year stint. I still persevered with what i wanted to really do for a job on the side. I got a break when the team leader interviewing me for a I.T. role decided to give me the job over more experienced candidates (i found this out after) as he liked my personality and thought id be a good fit for the team. I havent looked back.

What im trying to say is that you will get a break eventually, just be strong buddy.
  • In regards to the job.
Obviously I don't know the full ins and outs of your life (not since that camera feed went down anyway).
In general I would advise against taking any job that may end up leaving you too burnt out to write and apply for jobs, that way ruts lie.
