It’s only taken them three seasons but yep they finally made a decent episode. Frakes on top directing from there.
The scene with Picard and Beverly was surprisingly good and definitely the best acting Stewart has done since starting all this. I was also on his side during the argument.
Even the Raffi plot was well done and her partner became even more bad ass than last episode.
My only niggle is the fact that the…
Spoiler:
Enemy being changelings means we can do the “is it them” story quite a bit between now and the end. It’s clearly Riker for example but I’m sure they’ll throw in another gotcha towards the end of the season.
I feel like what's helping this a lot vs seasons 1 and 2 is the returning characters simply being much better conceived than the very wonky original characters from Picard (although, to be fair, the new captain and Geordi's daughter seem to be alright). The returning cast members are also putting in really good performances - Gates McFadden and Michael Dorn were really good in this episode.

Some of that episode was objectively good. Particularly the way the Shrike was built up, revealing more and more of its weaponry until the final coup de grace at the end. I’m going to reserve judgement on the Riker / Picard altercation as Riker ‘may not be himself’ but neither of them would be acting like that. The Crusher / Picard stuff was well-handled. Even Patrick Stewart seems to have been shamed into putting some effort in.
The Raffi actress is getting worse. I don’t know if it’s because the standards have improved so it’s more noticeable, she’s getting more to do, or she’s acting even worse but her stuff is abysmal. Worf is great. Then she gets most of the lines in the scene and wrecks it. Should have written that character out of there like they did all the others.
Anyways, good shit, more or less.
So, what happened to the big spacial rift from season 2? Where's jurati and her band of new friendly Borg?
Didn't she take la sirena from the past? So how is raffi on it now?
The changeling reveal was ruined for me by subtitles, said 'changeling 1' during a shrike bridge scene.
Right, worf. Says he's a pacifist nowadays, in his first scene he beheads a bunch of folk. And when did he start speaking like that?
At the same time the portal gun was used on that building, the shrike was in a standoff with the titan. So they stole it, duplicated it, and got it to the edge of Starfleet space in what, an hour?
Where are section 31 through all of this?
Crusher didn't lose Wesley to space, he chose to go join the group of intergalactic time travellers, didn't he?
Do we reckon Picard is gonna ditch the Irish romulan bird and hook back up with crusher?
The portal gun - bit shite and pointless imo, the shrike could clearly batter the titan without it.
There will be more, all I can think of just now........
The showrunner was asked about the Jurati collective on Twitter and basically said they just weren't interested in taking that plotline forward. She left with the alternative universe version of La Sirena from the Confederacy, the prime timeline version is fine.
Worf's line about pacifism is from the trailer and hasn't occured in the show yet.
Spoiler:
I agree the portal weapon is a bit wank but I can tolerate it as a throwaway weapons tech we won't see again after this.

Well blow me down, wasnt that a great episode (Picard s3e3)?
Riker is awesome as always. The scene with Picard acting was rather good and even though the de-aging thing was shonky, I felt actual emotions during the scene. Its not perfect but darn it felt like proper Trek.
Im not a fan of Jack though (the actor). He does that face tilt down whilst staring thing a bit too much.
Rafi.....is getting better but more lines should be given to her vastly superior partner.
Kind of an interesting tidbit from an interview with Jonathan Frakes - he was asked about the prospect of any further Star Trek shows set in the 32nd Century after Discovery finishes and said "Don't hold your breath."

I feel like it was intended as a bit of a knowing homage to all the times the holodeck was ludicrously kept going on Voyager while disaster befell the ship. It was self-aware enough for it to be OK for me.

I want this to stick the landing and then never see the TNG crew again. I don't think there's ever going to be another opportunity to competently round their story out.

Sidney LaForge somehow found time to get a a completely new hairstyle during an emergency. I don't care though, because that previous hairstyle was hiding just how hot she is.
One thing I would say for anyone on the fence about watching it is the online discourse is getting very spoilery after each episode very fast and as we head out of the early episodes covered by the trailers, quite a big bit of the intended appeal is twists and, like, "Hey, it's a surprise returning thing!" Also, I think they've given the finale to journalists at this point and there's no indication that it shits the bed. So while I don't want to overstate how much you'd potentially enjoy it, I do think at this point the risk/reward calculation tips into watching it now rather than holding on. (Also, if you want to watch it legally I think we've now hit the point where one month of subscription will cover you to the finale which hits 21 April.)
