Pro tip: If you're going to buy a lottery ticket, buy it the day before or the day of the draw. Statistically you're more likely to die than you are to win if you get your ticket earlier than that.

I'm going to Las Vegas in September - never even been to the US before ( I know - at my age).

From what I can see, Blackjack and Video Poker seem to offer the best chance ( i.e. smallest house advantage) provided you stick to the strategies for "best play". No guarantee of winning even if I could play without a fault - but should make my money last the longest....

No doubt that no video game/sim can recreate the distractions of the real thing but I'm going to train myself over the summer and it will be an interesting experiment.

  • dynamite, i'm not very good at poker, i just play with friends. i'm good at blackjack though. Won alot of money in my life playing that.

fruitmachines were (to a point still are) my thing though.

Poker in the early hours of the morning, when all the tourists are drunk and tired is an easy way to earn a bob or two. I made $400+ two nights on the trot just playing sensible poker and cleaning up against pissed tourists. You just have to identify any others with the same intention as you, and avoid going against them, and don't try to get too clever.

I think you can set up private rooms on poker stars. I will look into it if enough people are interested. What sort of stake are people willing/wanting to play for?

I have no interest in online poker, but would be up for some low-stakes (£5-£10 buy in) face-to-face games in London if anyone can be arsed to arrange them.

I'd be very keen on an IRL game in London.

I'd be possibly keen on an online thing.

    I live there!

Do you actually want to try and profit, or just make your money last as long as possible?  Playing the right things at the right times means you'll get lots of free drinks and stuff, so that's definitely a tactic.
  • My first and only foray into online poker was last year. Spent the whole time telling shit jokes and going all in on every hand. I didn't feel much love. Made about £400 then dropped back to my £100 start, decided to quit.
  • I would release the hounds, but after last night yo' momma ain't running nowhere.

Shit really? Can't imagine anyone sane living there - but I suppose the mad bit is only one part of it.....

I doubt I'll get good enough to win after training for a few months on a BJ and Video Poker sim - just want the money to last and maybe play long enough to get lucky (e.g. royal flush on a video poker with the max stake). I am quite smart (without being big headed) and once I get my teeth into something I usually get pretty good.

Would be interested to know how many hands a BJ dealer would get through in an hour (with say 4 other people playing)....and how much the low stakes tables would cost per hand so I can estimate what bankroll I would need for a few long sessions.

I guess I may well have to specialise in one game to maximise my chances.

  • The Strip is a tiny chunk of the city.  I live in a perfectly pleasant, typical south-western US suburb that happens to be a 20 minute drive from the Strip!

Video poker's never going to win you anything serious, but everything has scalable bets.  Blackjack, poker, keno and craps are the big money games.  Goober et al's advice to fleece money from drunk tourists on poker is the only safe way to actually win when you're here; treat everything else as fun.
  • P.S.  Let me know when you get here if you want a beer!

Poker just doesn't appeal to me - appreciate it as a game of skill - just don't like the idea of taking(losing) money off(to) others. I believe it brings out the worst in people.  I would rather play against the house even though the odds don't really support that if I want to win.....will be there for fun.

May well just do that! Will bear that in mind.

  • Fun is the attitude to take.  Play a $10 blackjack table with $100 you plan to lose, and you'll probably be able to scrobble about $40 of free drinks in the time it takes you to spend it if nothing else.
  • Ah, the free drinks. Although remember to tip the waitress otherwise you won't see her very often.
