The TV you like thread
  • Watched Life, Animated last night.  It's a documentary about an autistic man who is able to relate to the world thanks to a childhood diet of Disney movies.  It's an interesting film, but whilst the documentary does avoid giving you a rose-tinted Disney like view of everything, it also quite clearly turns its gaze away at a few crucial moments - partly out of respect for its subject and his family, but also it seemed through a desire to maintain a particular narrative.

None the less, it's equal parts tragic and heart warming, and certainly worth a watch if you have any interest in autism, or indeed Disney.  It's on iPlayer (one of the Storyville series.)
  • Sounds really interesting, will check it out
  • Watched Crashing about a comedian which wasn't bad. Mildly annoying in places but it has huge potential if they get it right.

Fortitude is still ticking ever box. I think we're upto ep 7. Really is a bit lord of the flies!

Episode 7 blew my socks off, you'll know what bit. Didn't get on with series 2, which is probably just as well as I can't find anything past episode 4.

Legion is still confusing me. It's a gorgeous looking thing but I can't make head nor tail of it, far too much cutting between present, past, memories, hallucinations etc.

Taboo is great. Top notch cast doing a bang up job. Can't decide who my favourite is, maybe Sir Strange as that ''I'll pop the bastard!" rant was amazing. Great to see him on form as his turn as the High Sparrow in GoT was crap.

Still trying to erase the awfulness of TWD from my memory though. So shit.

Sneaky Pete finished. It's like a decent version of the hustle. Nothing earth shatteringely brilliant but it was entertaining enough.
  • Finally finished going through Black Mirror.  Somehow missed it when it was on originally, so I've watched all three series in the last couple of months.

Some good, depressing stuff in there.  Felt like they had some money left in the budget for that last episode.

Got up to speed with Taboo last night, previous week's episode gave the wife nightmares so was on hiatus until someone at her work had pre-warned her which bits to ignore (FFS)!  I'm loving it, especially now it's actually going somewhere.

I think I got as far as episode three... worth continuing?

Yeah. It's a slow burner but it gets decent.

Finished the second season of House of Cards a while ago, not really felt the need to jump into the third one yet, so started Stranger Things last night. Good stuff so far. Best thing was B going "ooh that's from Lord of the Rings" same time as the kid.

Need to double check if my Netflix has automatically switched over to the American one, is there a way to find out what's exclusive to each region?
  • If I recall, the most entertaining way of checking if you're on US Netflix is to look at how they categorise stuff. If it says something like 'Camp Slasher & Serial Killer Movies from the 1970s for Kids 5-7' then you're there.

It should automatically change when it sees your IP address is stateside.

  • Quite enjoying Fortitude series 2. Good to see some continuation of the events from series 1 and building intrigue for this series. Although...
    Spoiler:

We also started American Crime Story the other day and it really is very good! The story is captivating in itself but the production, writing and acting is top notch. Even the slightly dodgy Kardashian stuff is okay.

Netflix is based on local internet. If you took an iPad wit a subscription, even if you paid in euros, across to America the Netflix automatically becomes local Netflix.

Thanks, thought so already, but a couple of other subscriptions (not tv things) we have couldn't switch or were hard to switch over, so wasn't sure.
  • Finally finished The Crown on Netflix. Absolutely superb series - everything about it is top drawer TV. Great stories, characters, photography, performances, writing, the lot.

Episode 9 stands out though, as one of the best single episodes of television I've seen in a long, long time. John Lithgow has never been better. That this life long republican (small R) feels this way about a TV programme about the parasites that live at Buck palace is a miracle and an indication of just how good it is.

  • Aye, Crown was great! Couldn't think of anything I'd be less interested in captivating me as much.

  • I didn't realise the lead for American Gods used to be in Hollyoaks.
  • Yeah Calvin.
He got shot on his wedding day by his bride's cousin because he had been sleeping with the cousin and got her pregnant but the cousin was jealous that he still got married.

I see that American Gods will be on Amazon. Guess I’ll need to find it on the high seas, then.
  • Just finished season 1 of Preacher really enjoyed it. Won't spoil it for anyone else. The show surprised me with its shades of grey. Defo will be watching season 2 when it airs.
