What do you want to be when you grow up?
  • I considered guard work for a while, then working for a shepherd at one point.
I was kicked out of the guide school- some visually impaired people just can't take a joke.
I went to uni and did lots of chemistry related stuff instead of doing art.

At the moment, I'm going between being a paid mural artist, doing stuff for you lot, writing another story and being up to my neck in being the only business dog involved in eCommerce.
I'm pretty much loving what I do, I can see a real future in it for me. I'm very blessed.

  • When I were a kid it was all about stuntman. Specifically, becoming Jackie Chan.

Nowadays, pretty much enjoying graphics/rendering programming, wanting to get more into the technical artist side but art skills severely lacking. Love cinema and thought about it, but seasonality, worse crunch and lack of job security puts me waaaaay off the film fx industry (also seems to be schisming somewhat at the moment).

My mum still wants me to become a stuntman. She seems to think I'm perfectly suited for it and would enjoy it. She's right, I would enjoy it but I can't shake the thought that she must have taken out a massive life insurance policy on me.

You know, as I've grown up, I've come to see much depth in jurisprudence and law enforcement... I wish I'd understood the whole thing earlier. Real talk. @Cosby What are you planning to switch to?
I'd guess that's a common sentiment. I certainly wish I'd been more aware of careers in IT or programming as a youth. The networking thing was something I tried to kick start again about 6-7 years ago with a part time course but it all fell apart when it became apparent that the company running it were incredibly amateurish. Partly my own fault for not researching it properly. Hoping to go back into it through more official channels this time once the money comes together. You ever think about switching up?

I've been lucky career wise, so a wholesale change at this stage in my life would make little sense. That said, some latitude would be nice, but I have to balance ambition with the truth, as we all do, right?

What's more, I sometimes look at where I am now, and wonder how different things might be if I were to make a few small changes. If the economy was in better shape I'd consider freelancing, but right now it's better for me to find a good employer, because it seems to be as hard to find one as it does for them to find suitable employees (which is partly why I feel I'm lucky with my career path)...

But getting back to your point about switching... I wouldn't want to go back to school for 7 years to become an approved courtroom advocate (or what have you), but I think I would like to learn enough about the law to be able to help certain people out and help them to avoid bad advice...

Or send those so inclined/binded on to Gonz! ^_^

But it's what I want to do :(

Working for ESA's a realistic prospect, as the last UK entrant was a military pilot and I've also got a science degree.  The amount of sniffing around that US companies do with foreign drone pilots means NASA's not the ridiculous pipe dream it might have been 18 months ago.

That sounds a lot like you're daring to become an astronaut. I really can't accept that. Unless you get me a job too. I have a B in GCSE physics

  • I'm daring a little. I'll try and get you a job if they eventually give me one.

Does getting through to the second round of selection for ESA mean I can call myself a failed astronaut right now? That's actually still a pretty good thing.
  • I would put that on my CV. Absolutely

astronaut was my dream job as a kid - that was the post Apollo era so quite understandable.

Pilot too - so elm has realised my dream..

Like the idea of creative writing for a living too.

From 14 or so I wanted to program computers - got to do that for 15 years before being foolish enough to get promoted.

    How old are you?!

I grew up around the Shuttle. Challenger put paid to any romanticism of that.

47 end of next month - so I was in primary school around the time Apollo wound up.

  • Who would take the chance of being the first man on Mars if the trip lasted 3 years?

I think i'd do it, but only if alone.

I do wish humanity was pooling a lot more resources toward space exploration

So all of humanity needs to pool its time, money and effort so you alone can go to Mars?

Aha! I got seconds on that time machine if you get it up and running G.

Are there any alternatives that you could/would like to get into? Something that would base you in one place if the travelling is the downside.
