The Builders' Shed
  • Tried to teach myself sketchup. Using the monitor I ordered I've tried to do a rough mock up.

  • From what I've read the cheapest way to make a cabinet is just do your drawings and go to Homebase or B&Q. They give you the first few cuts for free then its a quid or something every cut after that. They use fancy smancy machines and can give you two matching sides and all you have to do is sandpaper the parts smooth. Much easier than trying to jigsaw yourself two matching bits of wood if you aren't that experienced.

  • I could get it cnc routed at a local sign makers but I've got no skills to make the plans. I'm trying to figure out rough measurements then drawing it out till it looks right.
  • There are loads of plans for cabinets online that you can just download and tweak to your monitor size.

The sign shop should be able to take your design and make the files they need. They can't charge more than a tenner for doing so. They should also give you a copy.

Not for a tenner they shouldn't, unless their overheads are ridiculously low or they are friends of yours.

If you sketch out (doesn't matter how rough) and put the dimensions you require on it I can make the file for you.

I'll post more when I've time, but off the top...

Depends how tall you are for its height, and also the height of the bar stools you have or intend to buy. Example dims. 16" depth is the minimum for stability, I'd say.

MDF's the usual material (always cut it outside with a mask, or - if you've a garage - with the door open). If you don't like MDF, birch ply might be a more expensive but still-budget alternative.

For CNC, vector DXFs are preferred. I've a program that converts PDFs to said format, because I personally find PDFs easier to work with (for drawing shapes etc.). Paying someone to create DXFs would probably cost a bit.

You can get cutting templates for the sticks here.

Trapezial cabs are the easiest to build:

    d7c1C.png

Just leave the two projections. Lots of cabs. TV shelf (consider access for its remote, plus its speakers; unless you go for 2.1s).

Computer Space is still the most beautiful gaming cab of all time, and I'd love to own one eventually. I'd fit a newer CRT monitor, and install controls like mine.

It'd take ten mins to make the file he needs for cnc.

  • Some great links there Escape. Think I'm set on a side profile much like your picture. Full height and CP height are the only factors I'm yet to make a decision on, I'm thinking 1.8m for the cab and 1m for the CP but think I need to mock up to test. Received my 27 inch 16:9 monitor yesterday so based off that my CP is going to be around 700mm x 300mm which I think should be plenty.

Thanks for the offer Moto but think I'm going to measure and cut myself but I might want to bend your ear about vinyl wrap/art for the side panels.
  • I had this idea where I would fit a Raspberry Pi with emulators inside the fight stick I built a couple of years ago. My girlfriend decided that this would be shit because she likes playing Mario on a SNES controller. So having thought about things I'm instead going to put the Pi inside a NES cartridge and plug USB SNES controllers into it.

The example above is a SNES case but theres a few guides for using a NES one. I'm currently in a bidding war on Ebay for one and I've got the Snes controllers in the post.

Yes I know, it also takes around 15 secs to send an email but that doesn't stop my present employer being charged around £15 from their designers for every email they send.

If the company doesn't know him and they have to set the file up I would be surprised if he was charged anything under £30...

@n0face No worries, just so you know the vinyl will stick perfectly well to untreated MDF though I wouldn't recommend it for any edges that you may have routed/rounded off. In this instance a good lick of gloss paint would give the adhesive something to bite to.
  • be very careful with the screen depth. I've played on some cabs in Casino and they are really close up, its quite awkward now after so many years of playing with a 1-2m long cable away from your tv.
He could've just said they came from another planet but seems keen to convince people with his bullshit pseudoscience that he knows stuff. I wouldn't trust him with my lunch. - SG
  • Tilt and depth are something I'm trying to figure out, I think your right and I'll push it back as far as I can.

Perhaps this explains why most customers only ever give you a 200px x 68px logo when you ask them for their artwork.

The amount of people that don't have vectored artwork is bizarre? The best one is when they say they've got their artwork as a PDF and it is a 200px x 68px jpg saved as a PDF.

  • Fuck that standing up nonsense.
  • Is my first Cardboard attempt relevant? In a somewhat silly way anyways at least, in contrast to genuine craftsmanship here. I made it weeks ago and it's terrible, the kit i ordered came weeks later and is miles smarter, but it's mine. I'll post a pic of it randomly sometime and cast this workshop of playsmiths into a frame of absurdity
  • Course it is.

  • As with all my projects I soon got bored of the Raspberry Pi in a Snes box idea. It fits but its still not cool enough. Then I looked at my Atari 2600 which my gf 'accidentally' dropped down the fucking stairs! It's got all the switched for power, reset, game save etc and now that it's broken it doesnt really matter if I gut it.

Watch this space.. I'll make lofty claims and again achieve nothing.
