Started as sung choruses as the theme, rabbit hole meant I went aussie and then dan sultan, then I had to add The Game because it's so good even Jon will throw up gang signs out the window.
Dipping my toe into Kendrick over the weekend, haven't really given time to any hip hop that ain't 80s/90s at all, so a bit at sea with these modern cats.
Anyway, can't get enough of King Kunta atm, just the kinda of bumping funky hop I like. Probably old news eh?
Working my way back through his discog atm, but any recs of similar let me know innit!
I don't mind some of Kendrick's stuff. His early work is very fresh. More likely to talk about family and friends, than Crips and Bloods.
Then he picked up some heat, started rolling with Schoolboy Q and, well...
He's still a great writer, but to me, it feels like he's either doing somewhat elevated gangster stuff, or co-opting the whole BlackLivesMatter movement to sell Reeboks...
People complain about the new school, but there are some decent acts swimming in it.
I was going to mention the Underachievers... Quite a big duo in the US. One of the two, AK, is an exceptional rapper, who is surely itching for a solo contract.
Then there's Flatbush Zombies, who's first album, for sound, is nice...
Also, has anyone else picked up on Your Old Droog?

Less impressed than some by this, because obvious target is obvious. But you've still got to do it. And I reckon he's astute to know there's fan crossover and to call em out.
Got the playlists queued up for work listening today. I only know one Hilltop Hoods track - I've probably mentioned it before, but I was briefly obsessed with it due to the cracking sample, was called Nosebleed Seats or something, but I wasn't sold on the MC(s?).
I wasn't sold on them at all until their last couple of albums. Suffa has a killer voice though.
Meanwhile, new Wu is out.
Lots of meth, a couple of redman appearances, Sean price. But the beats are just variations on the theme of the track I linked to above, not always as strong as that.
Hilltop Hoods (Won't Let You Down) - second vocalist's delivery is hugely reminiscent of Brother Ali. With regards to the main guy I was ready to say I'm still not overly keen - once I pictured it I couldn't shake the opinion that he sounds like Sheeran flipping the switch to rap mode - but Rumble Young Man Rumble floated in and landed a great shot.
AB Original has a nice dirty/smooth thing going on, not quite my thing but it's decent.
Liked Joelistics, it gradually won me over and I'll check out an album at some point.
Never listened to The Game, guests spots maybe, but not his own stuff. Huuuge fan of this track.
I've ignored The Game for about 12 years. Good work, me.
Seems to be a guest verse magnet, nothing overly special about his flow or words, but it all works perfectly with the loud and proud throwback production/themes.
